Avensis 1999 Check Engine Light Please Help

when i have driven my avensis 99 1600 for a little while (20min maybe) and i rev it up to red the check engine lights comes on an then it goes away again in a few seconds but when ive driven it for an hour or so it wont go over 3500 4000 rpms and the engine lights comes on and goes again when the revs go down, i took it too a toyota garage and they hooked it too a computer and it said there was some problem with a sensor in the distributor cap, ive put a used one in it (from a friends car that had no problems) and changed the ignition coil and the airflowsensor and nothing works :(

no they didnt tell me, all i know is that itsa Bosch sensor, its the one with the plug ontop of the distribution cap
