What is the point in these? I can't see them making any difference to traction, if anything surely they would make it worse

They do work, but only any good on snow, as soon as it goes slushy/wet you need to take them off or they will tear off. Imagine the faffing around in a bad winter on/off on/off, no thanks

I've seen a few on big luxury cars such as Audis and Mercs but never used them myself. The seem aimed at the market of, for example, you want to drive down to a ski resort but don't want the expense of winter tyres just for a week's holiday and/or if you've a car with low suspension or expensive alloys which make putting chains on fairly impossible.

Not for me either. I would rather have snow tyres any day and if I had to faff in the snow it would be chains.
