Soon it will be time to change my Corolla to something newer.

The new car probably will be a Toyota. As I cover about 19 000 miles a year so a diesel is quite essential.

Two main candidates for the new car are Yaris Verso and Avensis. I've had one diesel car in my family, that was an Opel Astra DTI, which was really reliable and gave really good MPG, but on one day it started to develop various electronic and mechanical problems.So we sold it.

I've had lot of experience with VW TDI's which seem really good an reliable engines, but I've never had any experience from a Toyota diesel.

Avensis have two type diesel engines, TD- which is a lot simpler older design diesel and much more modern D4-D engine.

The TD engine will bi a lot cheaper to fix, if something beaks down, but it will have a higher fuel consumption (probably?)

D4-D is a lot more refined, but it has that complicated common-rial fuel system and dual mass flywheel. If something goes wrong there, it will be a big hit to the wallet.

So, can you share your experiences from a Avensis diesel? Any known faults? What's the fuel consumption difference?

The 2.0 D4D and below have been pretty bullet proof.

There have been some reports of the 2.2 cylinder cases starting to crack when put under heavy load regularly.

The VW TDI's have been pretty good too, but the new common rail VW diesel engines (Which are also labelled as TDI!) don't seem to be as reliable as the older ones. I know two guys who had the common rail TDIs, one with a Golf and one with a Passat, and both have needed engine rebuilds a couple of years after the bought them.

You're right about the common-rail VW engines. Not reliable at all.

Best TDI engines are from 1989 to about 2001. Simple direct injection engines. They car run for like 700.000 kms. Later PD (unit injector) and common rail engines are ****. They are, of course, a lot more refined and powerful.

But what about the TD? I have read that the fuel consumption isn't too good?

My Corolla gets about 38 MPG combined, which is ok. I drive pretty enthusiastic. And I got pretty cheap M+S tyres on it. My main complain is about the short 5th gear. 4A-FE engine is powerful enough and it doesn't need that short gear. It is pretty uncomfortable on motorway and the fuel economy suffers a bit.

I have heard That Yaris Verso 1.4 D4-D can do 56 MPG combined. Is that's true?

Yes.

And it's also cheaper to run. Not only by the MPG, but also it is chain-cam (doesn't need expensive belt changes) and it doesn't have dual mass flywheel.

all new toyota diesel engines have chain

and the 1.4 has a dual mass flywheel.

Here I'm talking about mark 1 Avensis and Yaris. 1.4 diesel got DMF after increase in power, so the first gen Yaris has SMF.

2.0 diesel at the beginning of its life was belt driven, now it's chain driven. First gen Avensis diesel is belt-driven.

All newer D4D's have dual mass but older ones don't.
