Toyota Carina E 2,0 Estate Do Not Start Anymore !

Recommended Posts

Hi forum members,

I am Jeremy and new on this forum, we live in Holland and looking for advise here because in Holland almost all Carina's are gone (exported) !

We own a very nice MR2 '85 and for 4 years now a 97 Carina Estate 2,0 ( 3S-FE engine) excutive with 227000 km for daily use.

It never lett us down until last week.

It just stopped in heavy traffic without any notice,I towed it home.

I checked bougies ,they are dry and get no fuel ,but there is also no spark ??

I cheched all fuse's and relais all ok.

Engine failure lamp stays out all the time.

Distribution belt is ok and there is compression on all cilinders.

start motor runs ok and there is enough petrol in the tank

Is there somebody who know where I must start looking for solving this problem ?

Thanks in advance

Regards

Jeroen

Hi a quick way of seeing if you have no fuel source is to buy an aero spray tin of Easy start from your local motor factors, disconect the air intake tube at the thottle body end and get some one to try start the engine while you spray some easy start into the intake and if it trys to burst into life for a short while >>>

You will know you have a fuel problem You should be able to hear at the back of the car the fuel pump run just before you try start the engine especialy after the first attempt if not your fuel pump might be suspect?

Looking for a spark at the plugs can some times be deceptive better looking with less light could be your igniter pack which is part of your coil pack system

Hi Petroleum,

Thanks for the good tip,I will check if petrol pump is making noise during first start.

But I checked in the dark and there is realy no spark at the spark plug.

Is there maybe another fuse (not under the hood or under the dash board these I checked) that controls fuel and ignition ??

i pressume you have checked all wiring connections and block connections if you have replaced the engine relay then im not sure what else you can check there Have you checked if there is a electric current to the coil when the ignition is turned on?

But all this is akward with out proper equipment like a Ohmmeter If you have a workshop manual and a meter you can check the coil and the distributer If you havn't got a manual i can try to copy a page from my manual but i cant promise it will work out Just as a chance have you checked that the rotor arm in the distributer is turning round?

Hi Petroleum,

There is a sound above the fuel tank in the back when turning starting key ,

Next I loosened the 17 mm banjo bolt ( petrol fuel pipe under the hood to injector gallery ) started again and petrol is spraying all over the place !

So petrol seems not to reach injectors ?

What you mean with " your igniter pack which is part of your coil pack system " how can I check that ?

Ok,thanks

First I will check if rotor arm is turning, and if there is a current to the coil.

Yes I have a simple ohm / volt meter which i can use.

Last update;

rotor is turning when starting,

I think problem is in wiring,in it's early day's a advanced alarm system is build on this Carina with sensors in car and under hood and a seperate Battery .

never used it myself.

I gone get it all out ,and if car still not start bring it to a toyota dealer.

Thanks for support,

If its the same alarm system as the 97 1.8 under the glove compartment is your ecu and a smaller immobiliser box with 2 block conneter plugs going into it Pull the 3 pin one out and leave the 2 pin and that should disable your immobiliser alarm system

IF it works then you have saved a whole lot of messing about taking it all out If the you can hear the pump at the back still work after, then you still have your ecu working and its a matter of still making it start?

hi Peroleum,

I saw your reply to late, and already got everything from the alarm system under the hood and in the interieur out of the car.

I think it was not a original toyota alarm system because they used "scotch" connectors every where.

Some wiring was almost splitted so I weld everything new.

Only problem is that I lost the carbon stift in the distibutar cap by dismounting it so I still don't know if it starts !

The cap is realy worn out so I pick up a new one tomorrow.

Well how horrible? so we must assume the original system if your car is a 97 model, must have been messed with? also not a good sign having a worn diss'y bush either!

I do'nt know it was the original alarm system, there they used scotts connectors and messy wiring I can't believe that is original but I never saw a original system.

I own the car for 4 years now and never used the system but it never gave trouble so i left it that way.

The good news however with the new cap mounted it started right away and runs like it always have been done !!

So thanks for advise.

regards

Jeroen
