Hi guys,

Strange noise is coming out from my Celica's VVTL-i engine. It happens only when engine is cold and it is lauder when car not been used for few days. Does anyone know what it could be?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it's the Auxiliary Belt and/or Tensioner related to me, very common to have this noise on the VVTi and VVTi-L Engines, especially in damp conditions.

Shall I change the Belt first before I spend a fortune on Tensioner?

Do you know any cheap shop for Toyota parts?

Thank you!

Yes, try the cheaper fix first, but order an Aux. Belt from a local Motor Factor, by all reports the Belts are just as good if not better than OE, and cost less.

TCB Performance Parts in Cornwall (tcbparts.co.uk) would be one possible supplier of a replacement Tensioner.

HTH :)

the reason this happens is it gets very hot under the bonnet and the belt gets brittle and glazed....get some silicone spray and spray it on the belt with the car running..that softens up the belt and the noise goes away..

******do not use wd40 or oils of the same!! silicon spray only***********

Sorted, silicone spray did the job! :D

Thank you very much for all your replies guys!

Dont be surprised if the same noise returns in a couple of days, the silicone spray will only coat the belt and soon wear off,

New belt is the way to go

silicon spray soaks in to the belt and turns it supple again done the wifes and it lasted around 7 months before it did it again..

When I had the Corolla Tsport (similar engine ??) I had the tensioner make a noise from cold starts. From memory, there were two pulleys, a metal "brass" coloured one and a plastic ? jockey wheel.

I used a long handled screwdriver to let a few drops of oil run down the shaft into the brass ones bearings by letting the oil run onto the face of the pulley and get behind the fixed metal cover over where the bearing is. Keep a paper twel pressed on the lower half of the pulley to catch excess oil. I did that a couple of times (and similar for other pulley and never had another squeek from it. Owned from new and the noise started at 3.5 years old, but I kept the TSport for 8 years and 72K with not another murmur from it :)
