2004 Avensis

Hi All out there!!

Looking for a bit of advice before going to mechanics....

I have a 2004 Avensis D4D T-Spirit. Last week, I was driving down the road, when the engine management light came on, and the car seemed to lose power.

The engine was still running, although when I pressed down on the accelerator, the rev counter only went up a little bit, and when I released the clutch, the car wouldn't move forward. I turned the car off and on again, and it seemed to right itself - although when I drove another 100 yrds, the same thing happened again. Engine management light on, and very little or no power when pressing down accelerator.

I know I'll have to go and get car hooked up to diagnostic machine, but hoped someone could give me a heads up as to what the fault is....

Can anyone help?

Thanks A Million

Eoin

Yep... I recon I'd start with the EGR valve 1st. Take it off and clean with some carb cleaner. When was the fuel filter last changed? Run some V-Power derv in it with a can of BG244

Thanks Guys

Sorry to sound like a moron. Whats an EGR valve?

Fuel Filter was last changed March

Where do I find the EGR valve and how do I get it off?

Is the 'stop recommending BG244' an in house joke? or should i really not use it?

Again, sorry for being a simpleton - but I really havent a clue!

Thanks Again

Hi,

The BG244 is amazing stuff(Take a search on here and read others posts) that you can buy from powerenhancers.co.uk They have a trade deal on the stuff atm. Its the only product that I've used (And I've had almost them all) that really does what it says on the tin. So I would use it as loads of us on here do. The EGR valve on my 2007 Avensis is at the top front of the engine under the black plastic engine cover. It has a metal pipe that connects to the cylinder block and the EGR has 4 bolts that hold it down. Sorry as I've not re read what year your car is again so on the earlier models they are on the right side of the engine as you look at this if I remember correcty. If I'm wrong someone will be along to correct me I'm sure.

EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve) helps with emmisions on diesels. But they kill them really and most marques of cars suffer with them coking/carbon up so go into "Limp home mode" and then the dash lights come on. Using derv like the Shell V-Power and others help reduce this effect as does the BG244 plus a good Italian tune up (Take it for a thrash/if its safe to do so). Give it a google and take a look at this and others! Thought I'd add the "Others" or my mate would be telling me off again! Lol

If you are anywhere near me I'd show you how to do it.

Cleaning the valve is what needs to be looked at 1st. But there isn't any reason not to use BG244(After the valve is cleaned) as it will help clean the injectors/lube the fuel pump. But its a personal choice at the end of the day. I (As many have) have found this to be a worth while product to use. Its up to you at the end of the day. All I can say is that my VW Polo TDi (Driving school car) has over 205k on the clock and still going strong on the original injectors!...

I see that KWIK FIT stock BG44K,this is the one that is for diesel and petrol engines and has the same claims for cleaning results as others in the BG range.i think they charge £20.00 for a can.

Once again guys, thanks!

The BG debate rages on!!! I have had a word with a pretty 'reliable' mechanic over here in sunny Northern Ireland, who says he will take the ERG valve out, clean it and put it back in. He says he'll 'only' charge me 40 quid. He also uses BG244, and says he'll put some of that in for an extra 20.

I must admit its cheaper than what I expected, but still wish I could do it myself - just worried about breaking the car altogether. Knowing my luck, I'll unscrew a bolt and the engine will fall out. lol.

Thanks for the offer to show me how MisterMena, but as i say, I'm in Northern Ireland....

Gonna have another scout around today, and see if any of my mates know how to take out the ERG. Will look into the BG44K, Acetip - thanks...

No probs mate. There are some very good "How To" on this forum that have been done by super moderator Anchorman and others. It really is an easy thing to do. But I understand that you may not want to attempt it. Good luck with it and I haope you get it sorted out
