Hello Other Kev,

Let it be known that a certain well known insurance company informed me that my insurance would be null and void if I fitted what I inadvertantly called a bull bar, which was actually the Toyota nose bar doodah (mainly plastic.)

Their attitude was that bull bars / nudge bars had the potential to cause more damage to other vehicles in the event of a collision. Don't know how that affects you over there in the ol' home country, but would rather not name the company in question.....won't bring up that Saga again.....

Big Real Kev

Thanks Big Kev i am of the understanding that if it was "fitted" before i bought it ;) its ok and my insurance company never asked about it. I will check the details in the policy too make sure its not mentioned.

I was told that too Kev. I have an A bar on mine, it was already there when I bought it. It is my understanding this stems from some new EU legislation with regards to these bars, however, if your vehicle is older or made before the date of legislation it is fine, but who knows.

These were banned in about 2002 I think for new vehicles; and it became an offence to fit them to older cars in about 2007 unless they meet safety standards for softness in a pedestrian impact (essentially must be made of plastic/ hard foam).

You are always asked at the time of insuring if the vehicle has been modified in any way and that should include bull bars.

I have always mentioned the bull bars and not once has it been considered a modification. I rang up anyway to be sure as mine are solid aluminium ones and am told they are fine. They are considered road legal as they were installed before the ban and apparently, according the insurer not a mod as it was factory fitted. Phew

"agreement with the European Union among carmakers not to install them on new vehicles from January 1, 2002.[7] This was followed by a full EU ban on the sale of rigid bullbars (e.g., by aftermarket fitters). Vehicles that already had them fitted prior to the ban remain legal."
