Generic Sat Nav Replacement

The sat nav in my T180 has developed a problem. It keeps trying to play a cd interrupting the radio. The dealer has tried three times to fix it and hasn't been able to. They have offered to replace it with a generic unit. Does anyone know if this will cause problems with tyre pressures and any other warnings. I would prefer them to replace it with a Toyota unit but they won't.

I don't think there is a correlation between the Nav / Radio unit and the TPMS.. If Your new unit supports the phone system and has a suitable nav and CD then I think it should be fine

Try a PM to Anchorman or SCHM. SCHM Is the electronics wizard on this Forum !! If He cant answer no one can..

Welcome to the Forum !!

A new Toyota unit was about £4000. And is a bit out of date now.

See what the generic unit is like.

Some of the units on eBay have tv, mp3, satnav map on sd card, pod connection.

If they offer a reputable make with bells and whistles and a warranty, check it out.

Don't encourage Mr.T....buy a bloody Tom Tom and stick it on yer windscreen. Maybe it's my ageing cynicism, but do a search on Rav 4 and Avensis factory fitted Sat Nav problems and expense thereof.....friar Tuck !!!...are they worth the bother.....?

sorry Aidan....welcome hereto....

I would be tempted to push for some thing like this Fly Audio as it looks identical to the existing unit, has all of the same functions but has lots of nice additional features like a built in ipod/iphone connection, SD card , etc, and is designed to work with the existing steering wheel buttons/set up.

At £800 it is a fraction of the price as to what a genuine replacement would cost - don't settle for some cheap £300 unit that you can find on the bay when mr t is paying thumbsup.gif

I would give them a call & check it out, I would guess that it either will 1) work with the toyota genuine disc or 2) work on the same principle of Tom Tom's etc, where you have no disc

Either way it has a 2 year warranty & you would never know the difference if you bought a T180 with one of these in

FlyAudio's 7500 Series Product Highlights

Less is

more. FlyAudio took some excessive components off its 7000 series and

proudly presented to you the latest 7500 series. Stay with us to

take a

closer look at the new 7500 series. You will realise why it is the best

solution currently available in the market for your vehicle.

Plug-N-Play

FlyAudio

features the biggest selection of vehicle-specific models. That does

not only mean that they look OEM fit. They are fully compatible with

their specific models. No re-wiring is need. They are all plug-n-play.

True HD LCD & Maps

Each LCD

has 800 x 480 resolution, and our system can also support the HD

rendering. We don't stretch the LD images to fit a bigger LCD. Our maps

also has true 800 x 480 resolution.

Steering Wheel Control

Yes, it

will remain functioning. Every buttons on your steering wheel, if

applicable, will still work. That is the true meaning of

Vehicle-Specific Design.

Rear Entertainment (headrest monitor optional, RCA connector included)

Or

headrest monitor, back LCD, whatever you choose to call it. FlyAudio

system supports RCA output, so everyone in the car gets to enjoy the

movies or shows.

Rearview Camera (camera optional)

When

you shift to reverse gear, the rearview camera will turn on

automatically. The blind spot behind the car is greatly reduced. No more worries about kids playing around while you are backing up on your drive way.

bluetooth (integrated or module included)

When a

phone call comes in, the music or video would pause for you to have a

clear conversation. When the phone is hung up, the system will resume

the music or video automatically. The system also has a big and clear

key pad on the screen, supports call history inquiry.

iPod supported (special connector includThe

system reads iPod and it can browse the folders in your iPod. It also

charges iPod and iPhone. When an iPod is connected to the FlyAudio unit,

the unit will take over the iPod, so everything can be controlled on

the big touchscreen. It does not read the video files in an iPod.

DSP (Digital Signal Processing technology)

This is a

huge leap from our 7000 series. The 7500 series is integrated with DSP

technology. It greatly improves the sonic performance. When you listen

to you favorite music in your car, it will not sound like you are in a

confined space. Instead, you will truly feel like you are in a theater.

System Upgradeable

What can

you do when you find that a new product you just purchased is not

flawless? Well, most products are not flawless, but at least you want to

be able to do something about it. That is what we think as well. Simply

with one micro SD card, without the need of going through a laptop

computer, you can easily upgrade the system as long as we release

applicable updates on our website.

GPS Navigation

True HD

maps of UK. It supports various ways of destination

search and history inquries. The CPU is much faster. When you start the

car, the system can pick up the satellite signals right away.

USB Drive Supported (USB connector included)

The

system supports a varitey of file formats, including WMA, WAV, MP3, JPG,

and more. No iPod? No worries, a USB drive works as well as an iPod on

any FlyAudio unit. It can also browse the folders in your USB devices,

whether it is an MP3 player, your cell phone or just a thumb drive.

DVD and CD Changer

Of

course, how can we make a great product without these basic features.

FlyAudio unit plays DVD and supports CD changers. The control is fully

integrated on the LCD touchscreen. And don't forget that the control

buttons on your steering wheel can also be used to control the playing

of the discs.

Christmas is soon ????? :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Wee Charlie.

Most likely it runs Win CE 5.0/6.0 and can run either TomTom 6.5 or IGo Primo.

They are a fair sight cheaper than £800 on eBay.

You do really need to do your homework, as the steering wheel controls will likely require a canbus to resistive ladder adaptor, the screen won't be as good as the Toyota one for glare and angle, normally the plastics are very good, but occasionally the circuit board design can have faults, eg whine from bad grounding or the iPod and GPS sound won't work at the same time.

Finally, with more functions brings more fiddlyness. The Chinese seem to think more animations are better. The eupopeans don't/

Compare - which would you rather use when driving?

As an update for a radio/CD it's a no-brainer. To replace the TNS700 it's a less easy decision. Also you will need to learn how to put GPS software and maps for the correct resolution on the SD card because it won't come with it.

Bob... You just talked Me out of it .....

Seriously I like the one Martin put up... As You may remember I was asking about Speakers a while ago as I Personaly find the system in the Rav a bit Err Well crap.

This is possibly because the system in the XF is a highly upgraded but factory fitted system..

The unit Martin has mentioned above seems to be a better unit in the power stakes ??

Plus it has an Ipod and a few other nice touches..

Bob a little advice on that particular unit ??

If I did change I would like something that looks factory. I like extras but dont like lots of flashing lights and stuff...... I would also need something that is true plug and play as messing with kit like that is not My bag..

Of course if a very similar unit could be had cheaper without sacrificing spec and userbility then that would be ace !!!

I only threw the £800 unit out there just as an alternative option for Aidan and I would guess that Mr T would be fitting any generic unit so should make sure that every thing works as it did on the original unit.

I am not suggesting that Charlie or any one else with a perfectly good OEM unit should swap theirs for the one I suggested, it was more a case of I agree with what you are saying as in there are £300 units & cheaper on eBay but would you want one of those as a replacement generic unit vs. the standard Toyota £4k one (or however many thousand they cost)? I wouldn't

There is only so much power you will get out of a headunit. They only have so much power available at the input from a 14V supply without a step-up power supply found in a dedicated external amplifier unit. They also use naughty ways to boost the headline figures, by quoting power into a 2R load, and power at an unpleasant 10% distortion.

The TDA7850 (and copies of) is the amplifier they all use these days, it is the most powerful 1 chip BTL amplifier made by ST. It gives 4*23W/1%/14.4V. All this 4*45W and 4*55W is rollocks based on high distortion and low impedence Speakers.

Plus it has an Ipod and a few other nice touches..

They all do iPod and SD music mate :) Sometime the bluetooth is ommited, but not very often. The thing to keep an eye on the the processor and unit software. Some are going dual core with 3D flashing lights. Also freeview (!) can add ~£100.

If I did change I would like something that looks factory. I like extras but dont like lots of flashing lights and stuff......

You may be out of luck. Flashing lights and fiddly software is the way these things are.

I would also need something that is true plug and play as messing with kit like that is not My bag..

Again out of luck there. They are built with a traditional resistor-based steering wheel remote input - like the old Sony stuff - and you need to convert from CANBUS to resistor type and then 'learn' the interface.

Of course if a very similar unit could be had cheaper without sacrificing spec and userbility then that would be ace !!!

Sadly, no-ne has the perfect unit for you. You want the Blaupunkt New York 800 in the RAV4 shape, and it simply doesn't exist.

Plus it has an Ipod and a few other nice touches..

As for that FLY unit, all I see of benefit for the huge price is the older style (slightly simpler looking) interface which looks more basic than the new ones, and the 2 year warranty. Other than that it looks very expensive.

When I was asking about Speakers a few members said it was the wrong place to start and I should start at the head unit........ Does this unit (FLY) Give an appreciable gain in that department ??..

Would You agree that it will work as stated IE it is plug and play ??

I appreciate it may be a slightly older unit in it s appearance but that is its big strength as far as I am concerned. I like it..

Reading the specs means little to Me as I only understand the bullet points..

What are the plus points ?

And are there any minus points ???

The price is high yes.. But Wee Charlie would negotiate some discount or source one elsewhere...

Thank You for Your help !!

Wee Charlie.
