Rav4 T180 Mixed Tyres

I have an ongoing situation with the tyres on my 57 RAV4 T180 which I bought 3 months ago - I posted earlier about a slow pressure leak from one of the back tyres which somehow cured its self after Toyota checked for a puncture it has since started losing pressure again and Toyota have agreed to change the tyre free of charge. I wanted the same tyres all round,I have two brand new Blizzaks on the front and two well worn Duellers on the back that came with the car - so the decision was obvious to have new Blizzaks fitted on the back but reading about them they are apparently only for snow and ice and not recommended for all year round motoring (Bridgestone site)can anyone confirm this and whats the consequences of having mixed tyres on the car - Blizzaks and Duellers - winter tyres and normal tyres - this is getting complicated and it doesnt seem quite right the car was bought from a Toyota dealership - Toyota have advised they are looking into it - appreciate any feedback

Hi Mike, Bridgestone Blizzaks are winter tyres (I,ve just had them put on my Urban cruiser),Duellers are an all seasons tyre. You cannot mix the two types, it,s gotta be 4 all round. Your Main dealer got that one completly wrong, and any way who ever put the new tyres on should have put the new ones on the rears.

hope this helps

I've always kept to the same tyres all round on my RAVs. However, on my Previa, I've never been that choosy... opting for whatever tyre happens to be a good price. The Previa is a rear wheel drive right enough and at the moment has the same tyre all round after I fitted a new set of alloys and tyres to it.

With the RAV, if you drive it hard then I'd guess you'd get slightly different characteristics from the front to back tyres. If you just drive it normally then I wouldn't have thought it would make a big difference. Fast driving on the motorway would maybe wear the snow tyres more though??? On both my RAVs, I've never fitted snow tyres, nor winter tyres and have always managed well on snow, ice and simple off-roading. If I want to drive through deep mud or thick snow.... I use the JCB

Bothy.. I think maybe an emergency situation could be the big leveller here ?? Imagine going round a blind bend with the greatest proportion of the grip on the front to find an incident in the road ..... Chronic lift off oversteer followed by a total loss of control ??

Extremely wise words from Clare.. Always run the same type of tyres all round and put the best ones to the rear axle....

Wee Charlie.

On the argument of putting the best tyres on the rear.... the fronts do the steering, and the fronts do the vast majority of the braking. If you have a version which puts most of the drive thru the rear wheels then I can see a mild argument for putting the best tyres on the rear. Otherwise keep the good ones to the front...try aquaplaning with a good pair of tyres on the rear and a worn set on the front?????? naw !!

Wee Charlie.

I have driven round a bend on the M73 slip from the M74 with 3 passengers and myself and had a blowout at 70mph. The only way I knew was a guy flashing his headlights as he could see the flat tyre. I didn't feel a thing as the 4.1 is a good 4 wheel drive.

I also have had a 100mph sudden blow out of the front tyre at 100mph on a fast stretch of road with the only sign being the sound of the blow out. The tyre was ruined needless to say but I had no problems with the handling of the car.

To be honest, unless the more recent RAVs are unstable, or the 5 door versions radically change the stability of a 4 wheel drive top range vehicle, which I doubt then I don't think any of you realise how stable the RAV actually is. Going round corners fast at 70mph with 4 up and a blowout on arear tyre, or at 100mph blowout on the front offside in the fast lane can't get much more emergency than that ??

On the issue of where the best tyres should go - put the best on the front... thats where the majority of the braking is done, and thats where 100% of the steering is done. Try aquaplaning with worn fronts and good rears and you'll understand what I mean.

Bothy.. What I wrote would really apply to all cars .. Some of course do not need such precautions ???? Personaly I would take them anyway.... But the I have extra hinges

You should not have winter tyres mixed with all season tyres, as mentioned above, the extra grip given by the winter tyres could make the car unstable
