First Test?

Well we went out for the day yesterday

When we got to our destination the main car park, concreted, was full so we had to park on the grassed area which after all the rain we have had was really muddy and slippery, but not for the Rav :yahoo:

We had to park on a slight embankment which the Rav coped with easily, while others were struggling, and not even bothering as they were slipping all over.

So that was our first real test for the RAV in those sort of conditions, and Mrs P was well chuffed :yahoo:

I think she wanted to drive all over the mudded area trying the it out

She'll be going off road next

I was gonna say i'm sure the snow and ice will be a different kettle of fish, when it comes,if it comes, although i believe the met office are forecasting a milder winter??

Forecasters have predicted that Britain is in for another bitterly-cold winter, with widespread snow and Siberian temperatures.

Coalition ministers hope their planning, combined with previously announced measures, will help avoid the chaos brought to the country by the winter of 2008/9.

Latest figures show Britain will face the season this year with a bumper stockpile of more than two million tonnes of salt.

It includes a 400,000-tonne strategic salt stock held by central government at key port locations and the rest held by local authorities.

The cold weather plan being announced this week includes a basic level of general preparations across the NHS, such as flu vaccination, and health and social care teams identifying those most at risk from sub-zero temperatures.

A level two alert will be triggered when there is a 60% risk of extreme cold weather lasting at least 48 hours forecast to arrive within the next two or three days.

At this stage, health and social care teams will visit vulnerable pensioners to make sure their homes are insulated and heated.

A media campaign will provide advice to people on staying warm and stocking up on medicines and food, and keeping an eye on those at risk.

Level Three will be activated when the severe weather forecast during level two actually kicks in. This would be equivalent to the conditions of last winter, when the country shivered through the coldest December since 1910.

At this stage, social and health care services would make daily street-to-street visits or phone calls to the most vulnerable.

Volunteers will be asked to act as “champions” for pensioners to ensure action is taken if, for example, a boiler breaks down.

Level Four, described as a “major incident”, is the stage at which the Army could be called in to keep transport links open, clear roads, and ensure hospitals stay open, though this was described as “speculation” by a defence source.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said: "As the nights draw in, many of us start thinking about getting ready for winter.

"For the NHS it means having systems in place to help the most vulnerable as temperatures drop. That is why this year we are launching the first ever Cold Weather Plan.

"Older people and those with long term illnesses are particularly vulnerable to the cold and we need to be aware - within families, in communities and across the NHS - of how we can help others when the temperatures drop and as risk from flu increase.

"Every year, there is a 19 per cent increase in deaths in the winter in England. By working together, this coordinated plan will help protect those most in need. We are determined to do all we can to achieve this.”

Figures released by charity Age UK last week predicted that more than 200 people would die in Britain every day this winter because of cold-related diseases, with most of the deaths occurring among pensioners.

Recently, a Government–commissioned report found that 2,700 people die each year because they are unable to afford their fuel bills. That is more than are killed on Britain's roads.

Yep - like the heavy snow we were going to get in October...

Even the met office say they can't predict the weather more than a week in advance with confidence.

I worked on a project where we had to plan the movement of a mobile offshore installation (rented out at USD 150,000 per day) within a 2 week "window of opportunity", i.e. in good weather.

Many tens of thousands spent on purchasing met office data, trending historical data, probabilistic anlayses to give confidence of good weather. It blew a hooley during the 2 weeks that was picked.

Don't be surprised if your Vredesteins don't touch a snowflake this Autmun and Winter!

(Have they all arrived yet?)

Yes Mate they are all here now.... You could be right they may not see use this Year.... But there is a 99.9 % chance of snow in the Highlands. In fact it snowed up there two weeks ago.. All melted now though..

I did see the Siberian forecast warning on the news at ten, which would hit GB in a few weeks time, but the met office dismissed it saying it's gonna stay mild for the time of year???

We'll just have to wait and see and be as ready as we can if it does hit us.

There are loads of berries on the bushes again this year, which has happened the last couple of years if you believe in those sort of predictions??

I don't think the forecasters could predict a punch up at an Irish wedding Paul !!

Lets hope its nowhere near as bad as last Year.. My commute up and down to the Midlands was just woefull last Year and the trip on the 23Rd December was misery !!

This Year I feel I have given Myself a better chance.. Cant wait to go up to Glencoe and Glen Etive when the snow is on the ground though......

Hi Paulus

Great stuff! The first time is amazing when you experience grip and traction when other vehicles around are sliding about hopelessly :D

You'll both love the snow when it comes!

When the snow comes though, I always carry some grit and a shovel in the back just in case. But since owning a RAV, they've not beed needed.

Hey Charlie, Glencoe & Glen Etive, now you're talking! When the snow comes and you're up there with your RAV, could you take some pics and show us please, that would be great.

Cheers!

Thanks Ady

It did feel strange to be honest as i/we was expecting the back end to slide out as we turned in to park up,but it just steered straight in no trouble, and it was very muddy and wet, fantastic
