Brakes

My rear brakes have started to make squeaky noises when I reverse

Is this a sign they are getting low??

I bought the car at 26k and it has now done 72k

What kind of mileage can you expect from mr T’s pads and discs… anyone got any ideas?

How long is a piece of string?

There are so many factors that I would think it is almost impossible to say.

If the pads are original I would expect them to need changing at that mileage but you need to get in there to see how much meat is on the pads inside and out. If you have a micrometer or vernier gauge you can measure the disc thickness and also check for uneven wear/corrosion.

Minimum thicknesses are in the service data sheets pinned at the top of the page.

For your car min. pad thickness 1mm, front disc min. 23mm, rear disc min. 8mm [Do please check for yourself]

It mat be the wear indicator thats squeeling. I tginky they have metal plate that touches the disc when they are low.

Or you could be down to the metal backing of the pad.

It only happens in reverse…

If it was that low surely it would happen when the brakes are applied all the time

i ve noticed the following:

63k kms on the clock

two fore pads have been changed

two fore discs are still originals

two rear discs -- are still original

two rear brake pads are still in use with thick of 5 mm

hope this helps

Could this be a binding handbrake and seeing as the drum is going in the opposite way to normal, tending to cause the gap between the linings and drum to close?

Or does it not have the same arrangement on that year?

70k and 6 years old. Still on original pads and discs at rear. Still on original discs at front. Front pads changed at 65K. Don't brake hard.

There was a very interesting piece by Anchorman many moons ago about brake "noises"

http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=86704&st=0&p=795551&hl=+brake%20+squeal&fromsearch=1entry795551

Its also worth noting that the rear callipers are very prone to corrosion and are worth cleaning and lubing at least every two years if you don't want problems.

If you find the cause at the weekend please post. I started a thread about this last year. It seems to come and go.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi pmb,

anchorman had a look at my rear brakes and didn’t seem to think it was much to worry about! probably a bit of grit got between the pad and disc.

However car is in for MOT today and it does need new front pads. :crybaby:
