I Know It's Not A Rav 4 But.....

Just on my way to Mr T to have the Yaris brakes checked and the radio wouldn't come on. The display works, the channels change, it says audio off when I switch it on or off. The outside temp readings are still there as are the av. fuel consumption etc., etc,.

I can still control everything from the steering wheel controls but no sound. Had the unit out earlier today but nothing obvious - except a rather worrying 'electrical' smell if you know what I mean. Mr T couldn't come up with an explanation and said take it to a car audio specialist. Any ideas please? And if it is a gonner then what might be the options? I know there are some real electrical gurus here so I thought it might be worth a post here also. Thanks.

Mute button?

Too obvious and insulting to an Old Raver. I apologise.

Is this by any chance the same or similar radio model 58812 as fitted to 4.2 Ravs....? If so, you have just described the exact fault I had in mother in law's daughter's Rav....£90.00 to fix...!!!!

Big Kev

Well Big Kev.... it's not the same radio in the Yaris as in my Rav but yes it is the same ailment - I just found a fix in Scotland for £99.00 Won't be doing that. Going to have to be a new head unit (non Toyota) can pick up any amount of good ones between £60 - £90.

Has anyone some replacement suggestions?

Will one of these 60 to 90 quid jobs work off the steering wheel controls ?? Or have all the features You have described in You post above ?? Also Mate consider originality ?? If for instance I went to look at a Yaris as a runaround for one of the family and it had a cheap head unit fitted I would be either walking or haggling hard for the cost of an OE replacement ...

Is it a single or double din aperture?

If you have steering wheel controls, budget £30 for an adaptor unless you can find a used one for a fiver on eBay.

I'm happy to stick with the original but you can't connect your MP3 or iPod etc etc... and my daughter must have her music wherever she goes....

Probably single? The radio and CD player are combined in one unit with the display, trip computer etc above -

For a single DIN then I would go for a Sony or a Pioneer. You can usually get one for about £150 with BT and iPod. The beauty of a Sony is that it's well made, keenly priced, sounds good and less visually enticing to thieves.

Otherwise consider the Parrot Asteroid, one of the Philips DAB+ units on eBay or if you want to keep costs low, keep an eye out at Aldi and Lidl who occasionally sell BT CD head units for about £50.

You have a very good point Wee Charlie and I would be tempted to replace it if I could find one! Can always get an AUX adaptor for the dreaded MP3 player.......

If you wish to keep the steering wheel controls, you many have to stick to the bigger name brands. Try Connects2 to see which brands of radio are supported for a Toyota.
