Prius Vs Auris

I (we) owned a gen 3 Prius which I loved, but my better half couldn't get on with the foot operated 'handbrake'

For this reason only, we (the missus) chose the Tspirit Auris HSD over a new Prius.

It's a cracking motor(we've covered 18K at an average 50mpg) carries our 3 grandchildren in the back, and is more than able either on or off the motorway.

I'm surprised that,in all the comments, nobody has mentioned the handbrake.

Having said all of that-I'd have picked the Prius :flowers:

It doesn't matter to me where the mechanical Parking/handbrake is, I hardly use it, the electronic parking brake is good enough for most situations. SWMBO loves her foot operated parking brake as she has had a left shoulder replacement joint so she doesn't have as much power in that shoulder for a hand brake.

Excellent thread and i agree with Hybrid Harbour. Having owned both, I think the Auris HSD has a number of advantages, not least all have 5 yr warranty, and the price differential, also more attractive on the second hand market if downsizing. Of course people defend the model they own, but it seems as though there's a lot of "big is best" opinion here which is inconsistent with green credentials and economy mindedness

Hmmmmm. Not sure about your use of inconsistent.

The gen3 prius gets slightly better mpg than the gen1 hybrid auris and lower co2 (if I remember correctly).

Although I see the gen2 hybrid auris has better specs than gen3 prius.

What happened with the Prius is: it got much bigger and more expensive over the years. I paid £18950 for a brand new T4 Gen3 in Sept 2009. Look at the price now for what is almost the same vehicle. My neighbour still runs a Gen 1 Prius, and its significantly smaller than the Gen1 Auris HSD.

As someone else said, the price difference buys an awful lot of fuel. So its not just a measure of the Gen3 Prius economy and emission, its also the cost of the thing in the first place.

As far as i'm aware, the Gen1 Auris HSD T4 89g has the same economy and emission claim as the T4 Prius.

The next Prius wont be smaller than the current one or cheaper, so at some stage people will need to decide if they really need such a large car.

I have run both models over quite a period of time. I prefered the Prius as it seemed a bit more refined and quieter, thats not to say I didnt like the Auris. Both models were good on fuel, Prius about 57MPG and Auris about 55MPG. The space available is a big point, the Auris was much smaller but that didnt bother me, it might some people but I dont have to carry golf gear or kiddy buggies and the like

If money was no object it would be the Prius, but I was within a few points of being just as happy in the Auris, you pays your money..............

Kingo

I know. The prius prices have shot up but the competition's hasn't. It was an easy decision to buy a gen3 prius back in 2009 but not so easy now. As for new models being bigger than the previous ones, that seems to be standard practice for the motor industry.

Agreed,

And if you're not careful you end up buying a bigger car than you actually need, just because it has the same name on it as your previous one. The motor industry cons you into always having a bigger more expensive car
