I didn't know this could be done,

I found out by accident in my '53 plate CDX

I held the button in and all settings went to zero

Before, the mpg read 44.3 mpg,

Now it reads 48mpg...Why the difference ? I haven't changed my driving ways.

The mk2 Yaris auto resets itself everytime you fill up with fuel, the mk1 however has to be manually reset, just like you have done but because it hasn't been reset for a while your ave mpg will be the average since last reset and tends to vary very little over the course of time(miles), you will notice pretty soon that it changes to reflect 'current' driving conditions, so the more you drive without resetting the display the 'truer' the average will be if that makes sense!
