Another T180 Owner Joins The New Engine Club

Tonight I picked up our T180 from Lindops Toyota after a new motor has been fitted as a result of excessive oil consumption - what can I say?

Well, firstly like others on here who have gone through this process, I have got to take my hat off to Toyota and to Lindops for making this such a hassle free experience. I have never experienced a problem like this (that would potentially have cost thousands of pounds to correct if I had to pay for it myself) handled with such professionalism.

The whole process from my wife dropping our car off at Lindops on Tuesday evening to getting a courtesy car to phone calls to advise on progress to picking the car back up this evening with a new engine has been a silky smooth operation with first class customer service thumbsup.gif

Just a note on the new motor (apart from it being very quiet), I was advised this evening not to expect the kind of MPG I have been getting (40+ with the chip kit) until the new motor has 'loosened' up a bit, which is fine.

However, I filled up with V Power on my way home and reset every thing to zero as I always do (yes a touch of OCD according to the wife biggrin.gif) and would normally see the trip computer reading around the 43/44 mpg by the time that I had covered the 5 miles journey home on B roads. Tonight though the trip computer just kept going up and up and reached 61 mpg by the time I had pulled in to our drive!! Is this just the fuel computer playing tricks due to the Battery being disconnected or some thing along those lines?

I know the MPG will settle a little tomorrow when the wife puts 100 miles on it on her daily commute and we should have a much better idea over the next month or so what we are actually getting (by the time the wife has used 4 or 5 tanks of fuel) but are other new engine club members seeing largely improved MPG?

Top job Mr T thumbsup.gif

Cheers

Martin

Superb Martin Pleased for You ! Mate My MPG has risen by 65 to 70 miles on My 360 mile commute to the Midlands. I fill at the same place.. The Shell garage at the Forth bridge, Then when I arrive at Jct 6 of the M5 I fill again So no !Removed! packet working outs. The fill check and fill again cannot be wrong....

With 5K miles My engine is just starting to free up now and is ultra quiet and smooth.. Now the chip kit is fitted I'm hoping for even better MPG but as I drive the car with economy in mind I doubt I will see huge improvements anyway..

Did You have the clutch changed ?

Wee Charlie.

I didn't bother with the clutch mate purely down to the fact the Lindops advised ours was good as new and reckoned it should easily do another 100k so I saved myself £300 thumbsup.gif

I would like thank you for all the useful information and advice that you provide through the BlogSpot (eg. Run flat issue). I own a T 180 Rav4 bought second-hand from the UK 3 years ago. The last year I have noticed increased oil consumption, fuel over-consumption and a white smoke.

I contacted Toyota service in Cyprus, I gave them all the info that I found in your blog and they said that I need to measure oil consumption every 1000 km (623 miles) for the next 3000-4000 km. I found out that the previous owner of my car had changed the clutch at 25000km. Now I have 96000 km but I notice that the gears are not smooth between 1-2-3 gears (at the start up).

What do you think that the problem is? Does it have to do with the engine problem? And what do you suggest me to do?

Thank you very much!!!

With regard to the engine you are doing it. If they find excessive consumption they should be ordering a new engine for you.

As far as the notchiness of the gearbox goes, they are often like that and it doesn't signify a fault. You could try changing up at lower revs and take your time through those lower gears.

Congratulations on the new engine! How do I get me one of those?? Although my MPG has improved to by 7, it doesn't really get much past 38/39 mpg even on a long run.

a new engine??

loss of coolant

coolant splatter all over the engine bay

black tinge to coolant bottle, black coolant

exessive oil consumption... 1 lrt per 600 miles any over that and you can get an engine..

I'm not sure how to make an engine use excessive oil unless it is faulty and is therefore doing it as a result of the fault.

Ours went through 1 litre in 800 miles, so we got a new motor.

I'm not sure of the exact criteria but there are some very knowledgeable people on here who will be able to advise accordingly thumbsup.gif

Our fuel computer is currently showing 44 mpg & we have have been advised that we can expect to see more once the engine loosens up a but after a few thousand miles.

I am also running a Lindops Chip Kit which does help fuel consumption thumbsup.gif

Cheers Ormi . . . .

I am sure there is a thread somewhere here but how does one accurately measure oil consumption? I have no idea how to guage this apart from checking dipstick (but is this accurate enough?)

We simply took ours to Mr T, they made sure it was full of oil, told us to do 1,000 miles or near to it & come back.

We did 800 miles & I knew from the dipstick that it had used oil but was surprised when Mr T advised that we had gone through 1 litre.

Cheers Blue. Not a bad shout, perhaps I will call up the dealer and mention that I want to do a consumption check as I am worried about the engine problem?

I've got nowt to lose?
