Heat Shield

Apparently mine is loose but was too thin to weld?

Is it expensive to repair, can I do it myself, and where is it?

I am guessing my asking 'where it is?' is a possible sign I should not do it myself?

There are several heat shields along the exhaust. If you can tease the fixings undone you can often fix them by placing large penny round repair washers either side of the shield.

Just curious what do you mean by loose? as in rusted away or just a bolt has vibrated loose, and which part, they are all pretty easy to get too. There are a couple in the engine bay, and few underneath as you travel towards the rear of the vehicle.

Hope this post stays, they keep removing my posts for some reason. Anyway, I don't think it is rusted away, not sure what the guy meant, but some times when waiting at the lights it rattles bad. I would have thought a bolt is loose, although he did say it was too thin to weld.

Someone said about chemical metal.

On the 4.1 its just corrosion on what was thin metal at first. I removed both and didn't replce, but I'm now running turbo engines... both run hotter and neither have the heat shield that you speak of. Not a big problem on the 4.1 in our climate !

I'd tend to say yes. make sure there are no wires nearby. The shield is so thin that altho it stops you from touched the very hot exhaust, its also very hot itself.

Thanks for the help.

It has suddenly just stopped rattling.

I am currently in the process of just getting rid of all the little rattles etc in the car, I think the exhaust is another, but it looks like a Jubilee clip is missing from the big box thing on the back.

So much for getting rid of my car. I just cannot part with it.

haha - snap! Mine'll still be there in another 20 years!

On the heatshield bit, I forgot to say but you can try using silicon (the stuff that comes in tubes as sealant) to pack up/out any loose bit. I was told about this and used it on a large generator we have and it worked - used to seal the joints !

Really, silicon? I would have thought any heat by that stuff would burn it or set it alight. Shows how much I know. The rattle has stopped for now, so I may just leave that.

I think I have fixed the back of the exhaust by placing another clip on the back, won't know until tomorrow.

Now I need to sort out a couple of dents. Honestly, my car is not a wreck, just little things I never got round to sorting and the result of the previous owner.

yep - I was surprised as well and sceptical but it worked. As long as its silicon!
