02 Corolla D4D Gearbox Problem

Hi My 02 corolla 2.0 d4d has a 5speed manual gearbox, and there is a problem selecting third when shifting down from fourth at speeds in excess of 23mph

It goes in OK but makes a noise as if clutch not properly disengaging

It will go in soundlessly when changing up from second at any speed. I initially thought worn synchro but if it was I would have expected it to be the same changing up or down.

Can anyone shed any light on this situation and suggest any remedial action?

Thanks in anticipation

what is the mileage on the car? if it's the factory clutch still with high mileage on then it will probably need changing and you may as well get the flywheel done while you're at it. i don't know of any common problems with the d4d gearbox apart from at high mileages it starts to come out of gear, usually it happens with 1st gear...

mileage is 135k ....i bought it with 98k and think it may be the original clutch although I have no way of knowing

It just crunches a little as it goes in!!!

is the clutch really heavy or is it still light? if it's gone heavy personally I would change the clutch and flywheel even if this doesn't fix your problem...

the crunching could be due to the clutch not disengaging properly when you're trying to put the car into gear?
