Howling Noise

Hi everyone

I've started to get what can only be described as a howling noise when I change up from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. It sounds quite impressive but I'm begining to hear it more now and it's starting to worry me.

Anyone any ideas what might be causing it, or what I could to to stop it?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

If we knew the engine type you are more likely to get replies.

If it only happens when you re-engage the clutch after depressing it, it could be a clutch release bearing. Difficult to tell without a bit more information.

Does the noise occur when you operate the clutch pedal?

Does it occur when you are selecting the gear?

Does it only occur on the way up the box, not on the way down?

Does it change with engine speed?

That sort of stuff.

I forgot to post that it is the 2.0 D-4d T3X model.

The noise only occurs when I'm changing up, and increases in noise if I'm accelerating up.

It also seems to happen when I'm releasing the clutch peddle.

thanks again for any help

Turbo noise? We have a noise when we change up on the same model (2007 facelift version), but I would describe it more like a bark than a howl because the volume of the noise increases then drops off again and is not constant. In total the sound lasts a second or two after a change and is louder the harder the engine is being worked.

...bark

Is it like a roaring sound, or like "baRRRR" at about 1600-1800RPM? Worse when cold?

Mine had a sound like that, found the reason was that the air-filter intake pipe "hammers" against the air filter case itself. It is in fact a common problem with the avensis.

Fix: Open air-filter case, take out filter element and look at the pipe coming in at the bottom. If this is slightly loose, secure it with two small screws to keep it from resonating against the side of the air filter.

It may be worth getting the turbo and intercooler plumbing checked out - there may be a split pipe which only opene during increase in pressure.

Yes, I had the vibrating intake pipe and got it fixed during a service. The bark is sounds more like it is from the exhaust, so the other end of the car. It is much more obvious outside the car then inside. The vibrating intake pipe could be described as a roar though, so could be what timfitz is hearing.

I also have this "HOOWWWL" exactly as you describe Timfitz.

It occurs as the revs drop during the "no load" period between gears.

It is more noticeable from the rear seats than it is from the drivers seat and with the windows open in a built up area it is most embarassing!

I can also induce the noise by revving the engine to 1500 /2000 rps and immediatly taking my foot off the gas.

The onset of this phenomena, some 2K ago, was accompanied by a dramatic loss of torque and power in the bottom to mid range, below 2500 rpm in 6th.

At about 3500 rpm in 2nd / 3rd gear under hard accelleration the engine seems to be holding back.

My local Toyota dealer changed the fuel filter to cure the power problem. Unfortunately this was not succesfull.

He has also attempted and failed to cure the Howl on another similar vehicle by changing it's exhaust system.

My car is an 08 Verso SR 2.2 D4d wiith 85K on the clock.

I have owned it from new and it has been regularly serviced.

Out of necessity the EGR valve was replaces at 68K.

All suggestions re. cures / causes to both problems will be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance

Howling noise still leads me to a clutch release bearing - or a dog tied to the bumper.

Thanks for that Druid Boy.

Does your opinion hold for the fact that I can induce the howl whilst stationary and out of gear by revving the engine to 1500 / 2000 rpm and immediately taking my foot off the gas?

I also get the same whilst in motion by acellerating and shaplly taking my foot off the gas?

Sorted!

No "HOOWWWL" and full power and torque restored.

Its back to Pocket Rocket status once again!
