Chemical Wash? Particulate Filter?

A month ago i bought a 56 reg T180. After 8 days it lost all power with various warings flashing at me! The garage i bought it from took it to Toyota main dealer, and to cut a long story short, Toyota have told me it needs a new engine! However the dealer is getting the particulate filter chemically cleaned/washed and are trying to reassure me that it is just as good as a new engine! This has been going on 3 weeks now and i have lost all faith in the car and the dea;er i bought it from!

Does anyone know if this chemical wash is a viable option or do i try and get my money back on the car?

Any advice would be very gratefully received as i am not at all car techy!!

Thanks in advance if anyone can help!

If Toyota are giving you a new engine for free under warranty, why is your dealer going out-of-their way to stop you getting it?

Tell them to drop off the T180 at the Toyota dealer, get the new engine put in (see the other posts - lots of folk are getting them) and then avoid your garage forever-more.

A chemical wash of a DPF isn't going to repair an engine.

Charlie will be along soon to put you right

Hello Sam and welcome to the club

If Toyota have said you need a new engine then don't let the dealer you bought it from touch it. Get them to take it back to Toyota. Toyota have extended the warranty on those engines to seven years and 12K miles.

A number [growing] of members have had new engines fitted recently.

Provided the car has been 'reasonably serviced', then there should not be a problem.

Chemically cleaning the particulate filter will not be 'as good as a new engine'.

Hi and thanks for the welcome! My husband is on the phone to them now with them trying to reassure us that it will be fine!! It isn't covered under the warranty as it has only had 3 main dealer services...but of course they don't want to give me my money back!

I saw that lots of people had new engines put in and didn't see an alternative, but was hoping there might be some good news to all this!

Thank you for the advice and will continue fighting with them!

Sam, it doesn't need to have a full main dealer service history - all you need is proof that it has been reasonably serviced according to Toyota guidelines. What mileage is the car?

But... didn't the Toyota dealer offer a new engine, even with 3 main dealer services?

Were any non-main dealer services done - as long as they were done on time and to specification, then it doesn't matter if they were main dealer or not.

And you could argue that folk have serviced them correctly at Toyota dealers and are still getting the problem. So there is an inherent flaw in the early T180 engines anyway.

By-pass the garage and go straight to the Toyota dealer. If they don't help, go to consumer services.

It's on 78k...apparently it hasn't had a service since 56k!

Hopefully will be getting a call from them tomorrow with them offering my money back. Fingers crossed i can also get back the years tax, 2 yr warranty i took out and a full tank of diesel!

such a shame as i really liked the car and it has now put me off Rav's!

:crybaby:

Did you speak directly with the Toyota dealer to see if there was any leeway?

It's worth exploring with them just to see how far you can get.

Edit: mind you - what condition are the run-flats in

Also does anybody know if this is a problem with all Ravs or just the T180...sorry for all the questions and your time in answering is really appreciated.

Yep i spoke directly with them as wanted some answers after 3 weeks without the car! No it didn't sound like there would be any leeway on it...the tyres weren't fantastic but not too bad. It shows how little i know about cars as i'd not heard of runflats till after i bought it and googled the T180 tyres lol!

All early RAV4 4.3 models, Avensis and Lexus with the same engine I believe.............It's a recognised problem that Toyota are well aware of and have honourably extended the warrany accordingly.

It sounds like the car has not been serviced in accordance with Toyotas required policy relating to this engine...

In My Opinion You should be speaking with Toyota Not the garage You bought the car off !!!

OK its been under serviced BUT there in an inherent problem with the 2AD Engine even if it has been serviced every single time on date and within Mileage.... So the lack of a stamp in the book may not make a difference if You nicely but firmly point this out ! The engine has failed because of this inherent problem NOT because its missed a service !

Demand the Tax disc back from the Seller if You choose to seek a refund on the car....

Having gone through this replacement engine scenario just a couple of months ago I know most of the procedure.. Not all bot most... So I will be happy to ring You and speak with You or Your Husband if it helps.. PM Me a number if You like..

Cleaning or replacing the DPF..Diesel Particulate Filter will not cure the engine of problems.. It will happen again !!

The T180 is a fabulous car and well worth the effort to get this resolved.

Wee Charlie.

They are pulling a fast one on you here! I've had 2! yes 2 new T-180 engines fitted under Toyota 112k 7 year extended warranty. A chemical wash is joke. A new engine has to be fitted and it doesn't have to be a full main dealer service history to take advantage of the good will that Toyota has put in place for a well known issue with not just the 2AD diesel engine as the 2ltr suffers from the similar issues.

I dont understand also why the dealer is trying to get in the way of Toyota fitting a new 3/4 engine! I would go tell them that if they are not prepared or wont take it to the main dealer that I will do it myself. If the engine has suffered from gasket suffle then a chemical wash isn't going to do a thing.

Forum member "Ormi" is a Toyota tech and is also well placed to give advice (And I hope I'm not speaking out of turn) on this subject. He was very helpful to me (And other members) when I needed advise. So you could also contact him if you feel the need. Charlie as well as others here are keen to help as I am with this. You can also PM me with your number and I will help with the experiances that I have had.
