Avensis 1.8 Vvti - New To Me

i bought a 2005 avensis 5 weeks ago and was initally delighted with it. suited my family needs perfectly. the engine has now packed in due to an oil leak/oil burning. the dealer did not tell me that there is a history of faults with this car. i am only finding this out myself by reading posts on this site. the dealer has since offered me the same model but a 2007 one. should i be worried? will i have the same problems? at this stage i am tempted to cancel everything and walk away. i'm very disappointed as this is my first experience of toyota

If the dealer is offering you a replacement and the car seems to be a suitable replacement in terms of condition and servicing etc why not take it? Your statutary rights remain in place. You say that you are tempted to cnacel everything and walk away but are you able to do thid? Has the dealer offered you a refund? I am guessing from your 'cancel everything' comment there is some finance in place - if so the option to cancel may not exist.

If you purchased from a Toyota main dealer then they will really want to resolve the situation to your satisfaction as they tradeon their reputation. If you are unhappy they gain nothing and you won't recommend them to anyone. Sorting it out with them is probably your fastest route to satisfaction. It is unlikely that a mian dealer sold you a bad car deliberately - selling bad cars is bad for business. They buy them in from a pool and often don't know the car at all. Chances are they are feeling pretty let down also.

If you are unsure citizens advice and trading standards may be able to help. If you have spent a significant quantity of cash a solicitor may well be worth a visit. They do cost money but you do get what you pay for - & they may even be able to transfer their charges to the garage.

Ideally sort it out with the dealer in the first instance.

Good luck

so your telling me you researched after buying the car???most people i know do that before buying the car....also how long were you driving it around wothout checking the oil because the using of oil doesnt happen over night????this oil burning is all over the internet if you bothered looking....also it would still be covered under toyotas extended warranty seven years or 120k so you would get a new engine....did you buy it from a toyota dealer??

Ormi,

Not everyone researches cars for known issues. I did not research my cars for faults, but will do in the future. I am fortunate to own the reliable leanburn engine since 2003 (1998 vintage).

Karina,

If you take the option of the newer Avensis, make sure that the car has full service history and warranty for the future.

Somebody may correct me but the oil burning issue was fixed by 2006. Check the forum for confirmation.

Another tip is to check the fluids at least once a week, what ever car you own.

Good luck on what ever you decide.

Konrad

sort of mate my husky had to go in for an op and almost had to be put down just wasnt feeling my understanding self...

i just dont understand how an engine just goes bang...it doesnt 90% of the time its down to lack of looking after and theirs little tell tails ie an engine gets rattly the less oil thats in the car...how many times has the oil been checked in the 5 weeks?how many miles have been covered?lets say the cars done 2000 miles toyota say 1lrt per 1000 miles so 2 lrts should have been added if you know what i mean..

but as i did say the engine is still covered under the 120k 7 years extended warranty so it should get fixed for free..

but if i was you id take the newer car if its going to be a straight swap as you will have a car thats worth a whole lot more than the 2005 one.and prob have less miles..

I'd also be interested to hear if the problem was fixed by 2006!

I've got an 85 plate VVTI and have been checking the oil since I got it last month - looking for signs.

The main dealer (where I bought the car) said that the later cars (mine) didn't suffer from excessive oil consumption. But he would say that, so some reassurance on this would be welcome.

not all cars suffered from oil burning you might be one of the lucky ones mate..any more than 1 lrt per 1000 miles is exessive

Ormi, I ran your reply (below) through an interpreter.

It came out as "Yeah, sorry Karina".

Just read my post! I've actually got a 2008 (58 plate - not an 85 plate!) - Last of the Mk2 Avensis line. Is it correct that the Avensis oil burning issue was effectively sorted by 2006?

Thank you Karina.

I am trying to be helpful and polite.

You are a new to the forum and I had to try and be as welcoming as possible.

The Avensis is a reliable car in general.

The only major issues known are the Mk2 1.8 vvti oil burning issues (also affected the 1.6 vvti), the diesel egr valve blocking up (most makes of car affected, not just Toyota). The 2.2 diesel oil burning and head gasket issues. Diesel dual mass flywheel problems (VW and Ford are known to have problems).

Some faults depend on how the car is driven and maintained.

Test drive the newer Avensis (if you have not done so already). Get someone to go with you.

Good luck again Karina.

Sorry to hear about the huskey Ormi

Karina - i hope you get your transport sorted asap,

In all fairness though if the car was bought from a Mr T outlet - youd expect it to be perfect anyhow.

Incidentally Druid boys comments about cars being bought from a pool is interesting because ive noticed my nearest Mr T and his Ford equivelant in the same Town buying in cars from the UK (im in Southern Ireland). Ive often wondered how they go about buying them - much as id love to imagine the head salesman hopping on a plane to personally inspect them all - with the numbers im seeing it doesen't seem overly practical.

Thus id expect a lot of these cars are bought from known trusted sources in the UK and transport over arranged, Youd think though that a delligent inspection of the cars prior to sale would show up any potential issues. And an insertion of a clause in the contract stating that the contract is subject to the car passing all of the recieiving dealers inspections and history checks etc etc would help safeguard the dealer from being let down by his supplier.

well not really a sorry.... because in 5 weeks the oil should have been checked if you are doing things by the manual 5 times.....ie once a week..

I must be doing something right here as I check all the fluids every day b4 I start the engine. Thats what my old driving instructor taught me back in the day.
