Whats Included In The 50K Mile Service ?

Whats included in the 50K mile service ??

Apart from the Oil and filter change ? Will the Air filter and pollen filter automatically be changed ?? What else is included ??

I have been quoted £158 inc VAT for the service which is not to bad but quite a lot if all I get is an Oil change ???

It would of course be nice to get a Dealer stamp in the book as the car so far has a full Toyota History...

On the other hand I have around 5o litres of Castrol GTX Magnatec 5W30 fully synthetic oil in the garage ........... What to do...

All the brakes discs and pads were changed at the last service and as the car has done 90% of its miles on the motorway they are still in tip top order....

There should be a list of what is covered in minor & major services respectively in your service book. It should also specify which service is which, i.e. minor or major (I assume the 4.3 sequences its sevices the same way as the 4.2). My dealer always phones me if they think that the pollen filter needs changing or to suggest re-gassing the air con, etc.

Our cars have always been serviced by Toyota & I've never found them to be excessively expensive; certainly a FTSH is worthwhile come re-sale time, particularly if you're trading into a Toyota dealer.

I agree a full dealer history is desirable but several People have asked for first refusal on the Rav if or when I sell it so its very unlikely it will get traded in...

So the pollen filter is not part of the service then ?? I do need to find out what is included and My books are down in the Midlands 360 miles away so does anyone have a link ??

I should have asked really but was in a hurry when they called Me back...

Thanks..

50k=oil and filter and tyre pressures and a visual check of everything else

Really ....... !Removed! hell. I wondered why I was asked if I was asked if I would be waiting for the car ??

If I'm honest if the Lady that was taking the booking had not asked the Question. Will You be waiting for the vehicle Sir ?? I would not have asked My question above !!!

Question 2 then....

With all respect I am a little reluctant to pay 158 quid to have the oil and filter changed ... So should I simply do it Myself and get the book stamped by a Mate who has a garage OR is that Toyota stamp worth 158 quid ???

Being the fussy Bstard that I am I've already changed both the Pollen and Air filters 5K miles ago when the engine was changed... I've had all the wheels off and checked cleaned greased the brakes where needed.. ect ect .. I do the tyre pressures every time I go south as I have a compressor in the garage....

I have Castrol GTX Magnatec 5W30 fully synthetic oil... This I assume is fine ?? Or does the car with its fancy DPF require something else ??

in 2009 I bought a Mondeo Titanium X estate for the wife..... One Year old with 4K miles I took it to the Ford Dealer for its annual service... It took 15 yes fifteen minutes for the technician to perform the service... Cost ?? 160 quid... Work carried out ?? Your in front already aren't You ????  ;)

My first answer to your question was going to be "not a lot"!

However, you should be able to get a bit better price than what you have been quoted..

Last time I did a service 4yr/ 40k the capital T-cartel (that includes the Fife outlet) asked for 415 pounds. Told them where to go and then got it done in Perth for 220. About 40 min drive for best part of 200 quid, no brainer... Falkirk was not too far off the Perth price either.

Your mileage may vary, the point is to phone a couple of places and see...

As for if it is worth it... I had no choice, extended warranty demands T-dealer servicing. But if you manage to get it closer to a ton, then I would think that it is...One thing less to explain when selling on...

HTH. Good luck.

If the Castrol GTX Mag 5w-30 meets the C2 spec then it should be okay and I'd be bu**erd if I'd pay £158 for an oil and filter change! Your mate could help you out with a stamp then I'd consider that. I know what its like when you have a rook of oil sitting about doing nothing. I've got over 40ltr of Mobil 1 and 20+ lts of Motul 300V.

I've been chatting yesterday to Tim at Opie Oils with regards to what the best oil is between Mobil 1 ESP (5w-30) and this oil http://www.opieoils....iv-engines.aspx it looks like the Motul takes the edge so the Opie boys say...It has a higher TBN than the ESP so better for engine wear.

I would just do it my self you know its done right then, I dont think anyone looks at Main dealer service history on a car of your age, I certainly dont, I look for more the condition of the vehicle for the age.

I personaly would be more wary of main dealer services, as they tend to be rushed.

I am more than happy to pay for a service !! But not 158 quid for an oil change ..... Sorry if it sounds tight but a service to Me is all filters .. Check the brakes ( Already done but don't mind a second opinion) ect ect... The Visual Health Check is free anyway so it seems that of the above is correct then it is £158 just for the oil change.. This I can do Myself.. I have access to a ramp so getting at it is very easy....

Why do garages do this ?? I mean a fair price for a fair service or job would mean more work ??

I will be cancelling the so called service tomorrow as I cant see the point !!! I will simply do the same work Myself and have the book stamped... In a way I feel this is a little underhand BUT the same job will be done so no real issue....

Wee Charlie.

Interesting reading as mine is due it's 30k soon, same as the 50k but as it is at just under 3 years and warranty will be up soon and first MOT due, I think it has to be Mr T this time, I almost P/EX it this weekend but kinda figured I would wait a bit longer and get through the winter.

Interesting comment by the dealer, "good 2nd hand RAV's are rarer than rocking horse poo this year, soon as they are traded in, they are sold, one he had recently was sold before it came in for the P/EX"

shame he gave me such a poor trade in value really

Hi all, I also found that the intermediate service was a bit steep for what was really just an oil change. If like me where we kept the last Rav until it was 7 years old and then took it for part-ex, it didn't make any difference to the value we got. They went mainly on condition / mileage and also 5 services @ £150 means you can let it go for a bit cheaper anyway. I was given what I thought was a good tip in which you write in the service manual, in the correct box the date and mileage relating to that service. Then staple all receipts you ever buy inside the back cover to back it all up. I think if I were to buy a car privately then a good approach like this would hopefully show it came from a good owner and was well looked after. thanks Kipperwood

If I haven't got one I will remove the panel and use the tool in the lower picture on the sticky... On the sticky it says 65 mill but I see there is a little confusion............

Is this a very specific size ??

I've measured them at 64mm with a vernier but it seems that 65mm sockets are often supplied. You see that the proper socket has two little cut outs that engage the lugs you can see in the sticky. I did Guy's (Vivienne M's) oil not long ago and broke the socket trying to undo it. It had been done previously at the dealer but there really is no need to do anything other than nip it to the torque shown as it doesn't rely on being tight for a seal, that is done by the rubber ring. I've done Guy's twice now and get covered in oil because the drain plug (which should be tightened even less than the filter housing)has been left so tight by the dealer that I'm frightened of smashing the casting to undo it. I couldn't grip it tight enough in the vice!!!

This is what I do, but I print off on a printer  what has been done, just looks neater to me than hand writing, I keep all reciepts in a envolope labled service history, so anyone can cross check whats in the service book against reciepts.

You dont get detail like this at a main dealer

Don. On My car its definitely the 64 mill Socket that fits... I asked the Techs at Toyota Dunfirmline when I went to pick up the filter and sump plug washer .. I also took the cover down and fitted it just to make sure.....

Just a sanity check on those Torque values please ??

Filter Housing. 40 NM

Filter housing drain plug.12.5 NM.

Sump plug with new washer. 38NM.

5.9 litres of in My case 5W30 Fully synthetic oil.

I was tempted to do the change outside on the floor but it was !Removed! wet.. So I will do it on My Mates lift tomorrow afternoon when I get down to the Midlands as I plan on removing the cover and giving it a good clean....

One last thing.. On the lid of the filter box it shows the O ring seated in a grove around 10 mill ( From memory) from the bottom of the housing ??

Thanks..

Wee Charlie.

the above isnt true(the list)you DO NOT rotate T180 wheels you do not check the drums/adjust hand brake

he11 you dont even take the rear wheels of on a intrum service

you will see when youve removed the housing you will see the rubber oring...me myself i dont remove the drain cap on the bottom as i dont feel the need too..

Hi Charlie

The torques are repeated here;

Oil Change.pdf

The service reset procedure is here

oillightreset.jpg

The ring goes into the groove about 10mm from the flange. Toyota have made a big thing about it because in the USA you can get your oil changed on any street corner or even while you shop in Walmart. Some of the plebs were putting the rings right under the flange and when the engine siezed, they were trying to sue Toyota for not having clear instructions!!!
