Just been into garage with my 2.2 Avensis heard a vibrating type noise from exhaust. Hoped it would be loose exhaust mounting , garage says that it is the turbocharger waste gate which is causing the problem, anybody out there know anything about this and can recommend a turbo repairer preferably in SCOTLAND WEST IF POSS.All suggestions welcome. The garage says this is not unknown once engine has passed 120000 mls mine has 138000.

em never heard of that in all my years as a toyota tec....but i have had problems like the one you described and it turned out to be the joint at the rear of the exhaust it is on springs and should move freely if it doesnt move the exhaust vibrates and causes the noise your describing....easy to check yourself and the fix a ten pound carbon gasket

the gasket..

2.5%20inch%20donut.jpg

it swells and sticks to the back box fl@ng so its not free moving anymore

That sounds more like the cause Ormi and for a tenner it could be a steal.

Maybe smearing the new carbon ring and flange with Copperslip may help for the future, I do love the stuff and you can't beat a bit of Copperslip on a flange ;).

Pete.

Chap i know had a turbo problem with his VW (Garret)it was replaced under warranty wish a refurbished one,he was still having problem.he saw a statement by Garret saying they do not approve of refurbished turbos as fitting parts to a used turbo does not work well.he took the car back to dealer and showed them the statement and told the VW dealer

if the turbo was not replaced with a new turbo he would sue them and VW.the turbo was again replaced with a brand new one and he no futher trouble.

Hi ormi, had a simuler thing with a VW Jetta, only heard the noise when starting or stopping engine.the flange where the gasket was fitted was as you say retained by springs, they treated it with copper grease.but then a modified flange and gasket wa fitted and i never had any further problem with it.i had a golf (spit) and then a passat fitted with ths same engine and never had those poblem,so the mod worked well.

if the wastegate was vibrating then car would be in limp.

Ormi,
