retro fit hid are now not going to be illegal and can pass a mot their has been an amendment in the new mot rules...

Wow! Could you link to more detail about this from VOSA please?

its on this forum already its a loop hole due to cars like the atom etc....they have hids but no self level or wash ....new laws would have made those cars illegal so as long as the suspensions stiff thats that...

• There will NOT be a total ban on the use/sale of aftermarket HID kits, which was a major part of the proposal. The current MOT rules state

High Intensity Discharge (HID) and LED dipped beam headlamps (whether original fitment or after-market) must be fitted with a headlamp washing system (a wiper is not required) and be self levelling. This may be achieved by the use of either headlamp or suspension levelling systems.

However, some high performance vehicles fitted with HID headlamps that have limited luggage space and stiff suspension do not require a self-levelling system.

So my reading of that is that if you fit HID's from your local Halfords or car parts shop and your car does not have headlamp squirters or self levelling, then you are illegal... Which surely is the point? These boy racers with a basic 1.4 Corsa and foglights that don't have an off switch and retrofit HID's are therefore illegal??

So the point about stiff suspension and limited luggage space is that you can't weigh down the back of the car - forcing the headlamps up I suppose. Headlamp washers don't get a mention, nor do the E marked lamp housings.

Here'sa little site with some interesting info. Most importantly for me is that an HID bulb can never replace a filament bulb due to the angles of the source of the light (he says).

Apparently glare is frequently caused by people retro fitting HID kits into reflector housing and the beam patterns going slightly Pete Tong. I also found that many early example xenon headlights from the likes of Range Rover and BMW had those awful 'twinkling' light patterns. They were the bane of my life when I used to drive my old MR2. Not so bad in the Rav with it's tinted rear view mirrors.

I myself have fitted after market HID into the T180. The beam pattern is tight and appears correct. I'll be watching closely what happens come MOT time. I've driven in front and behind the car with the HID's on dipped and there is absolutely no 'twinkling' or 'glare' from the car, so I am hoping the suspension tip will get us through. I was genuinely surprised just how well they suited and fitted into the Rav 4. Had a Shogun pull up at the lights (I was in front of the Rav 4) and it's factory Xenon's looked the same and lit up the road with a similar pattern. HID's make the world of difference the way they throw light to the side of the road. I wouldn't go back . . . Unless it failed it's MOT

Why didn't the Rav just come with them?

well its not as simple as that........who say what a sports car is??in toyotas eyes the t180 range is their sports cars as they are the fastest in their range so will they be classed as sports cars?also their is no mesurement for limited luggage space....ie this is a loop hole till some one comes out with mesurements..

i drive an is200 sport tte supercharged....coilovers and fully chassis braced and stiff so is my car a performance car?their is no right and wrong answer the now as their is no charts

I just can't stand the glare from the bright lights, made worse by the fact I wear glasses.

Those twinkle type lights, I keep thinking it is my eyes going funny.

I really dislike those neon lights, the blue led lights and some super duper bright brake lights. I have started to dislike driving in the nights. Not enough traffic cops. So many cars driven around with lights out, lights in the air, dodgy number plates.

Anybody noticed an increase in mini number plates on cars and number plates in Italics?
