Avensis Tourer 1.8 Auto Or 2.2 Auto?

We are currently looking a moving from a yaris to an avensis.

I'm lazy and want a autobox for long journeys etc , so we have the option on either the 1.8 or 2.2D.

The car will be doing around 12k a year , mostly townsih work ( higher speed than most though on the milton keynes grid system.)

The diesel would be a lot more money , but looking at the stats not much more economical. What are peoples thoughts?????

Both the cars would be under a year old and brought from a Toyota dealer.

Hi,

I think with the milage that you'd be doing then I'd go for the Petrol engined car over the Diesel. There have been lots of issuses with the oil burners due to the headgasket issues that are covered under the 7 year 112k extended warranty. As you are doing mostly town work the EGR valve could coke/carbon up unless you give them a good Italian tune up every now and again.

You have to concider to cost difference between unleaded and derv now at being in the region of 8p+ and that the service on Diesel models are higher. I have an Avensis T-180 estate and I must say I love driving it, but I do a far amount of motorway milage and only ever use Shell V-Power derv to help maintain the EGR. Have you considered any other marques of cars? Kia seem to be up and coming now. Or maybe Skoda Octavia( Diesels very good to) are fab motors or VW Passet.

assuming that you are happy with the driving of both then for your estimated mileage I too would lean towards the petrol.

Bit surprised that you want an autobox for long journeys though as in my experience it's the short urban journeys where autos are most useful.

We like our toyota dealer , they are about 5 mins drive from our house and we did look at passats and Skoda's but the Avensis is much cheaper!!!

Also on the auto box front, I find when I do long journeys we always end in traffic and we have to go down to see my mum in london it great. The autobox can actually tow more as well.

I agree that auto's are best suited to town rather that motorway (Unless you're in a big traffic jam) driving. You must also be aware that the auto box will cost more on fuel to run over a manuel box. But if you looked at the VW's with the DSG boxes they are just as good on fuel as the manuel boxes afaik. These boxes have already pre selected the next gear whilst you're in the lower one, so it gives it a seemless gear change and can do this faster than if you were to do it in a manuel driven car. The DSG has had very good reviews.

Just hope that any of the auto's don't give you any problems or it could cost an arm and a leg. But as long as the auto fluid is change then you shouldn't have a problem...

From the cars I've had over the years , autoboxs are better and cheaper to run than most manuals when you take clutches , dual mass flywheels etc into account. Also if you look at the figures there is hardly any difference between the auto and manuals enconomy.

Out of curiosity does any one have a 1.8 auto and 2.2 diesel ( on a new shaped avensis) and can they tell me what sort of mpg they get?

The DSG has had very good reviews.

& lots of failures ... go look at the Audi/VW/Skoda forums. or just Google "DSG failure".

& apparently they always cost £1k+ to fix & can only be fixed by very few places (in fact for long enough there was only 1 approved repair shop in the UK).

I think lots of manufactures have problems with something tbh. You only have to look at Mazda and there EGR valve problems. I wasn't aware of this untill my mate Acetip mentioned it to me...

No, they resolved it in production something like 2005.

Hi Colin

Your comment 'the auto box can tow more' caught my eye. If towing more was important to me I would be buying the big diesel lump. There are no right or wrong answers here. Whatever you do someone will criticise it and, as long as its not your wife, who cares as long as your are happy?

Its got to be the Petrol on paper, its cheaper to buy, equal on fuel consumption, no EGR issues and 12k per annum is to low for a Diesel to make sense.

As long as you know its going to lack the Diesels low end grunt and has to be revved to get going all should be well

Test drive on both is a must though
