Well after me saying recently how well our Rav is doing after three months of ownership, we were on our way out this morning going to sort one of our double glazed units out, when we were about half way there and there was knocking/banging noise coming from under the Rav all of a sudden.

Getting out expecting the exhaust to be hanging down i couldn't see nothing wrong,so thought it was suspension or summat.

So we headed home thinking the worse as you do, :crybaby: when we pulled in to a new garage that has opened up recently so they could have a look.Which they did and found that the heat shield had fell off between the exhaust and fuel tank

They then went ahead and repaired it for us while we waited, which took about forty minutes,in between talking and seeing other customers. So we were pleased with the service from them

It does make a heck of a racket sometimes when the heat shield is flapping about under your car, It's a common occurrence that sounds so much worse than it actually is. It's nice to hear of garages taking a bit of pride in there customer service, good for them  and you

Yes it was a shock to the system when they said they could do it while we waited

I was expecting them to say, after a deep sharp in take of breath that is,

No chance mate we are booked right up to next week with jobs.We can do it next week some time for ya.

So it was a pleasant surprise that they didn't and they done it and were friendly also.

The bloke who did the job owned an Honda 4wd and was telling me how well built the Jap cars are and take some beating.

Thanks for the offer Kev but i think we'll be keeping this one a while longer :D

My local indipendant garage told me the same thing when I told him I was looking for a small 4x4. I have owned a couple of Nissan Primeras in the past and I couldn't fault them, the engines were great, almost indestructable. Japanese cars are the mutts cheggies.

Agree with that, Chaps. I've always maintained that if I'm spending my own money on a car, it has to be Japanese (could be persuaded to add Korean now too - the Sportage is a seriously nice car now, previous one lokked like somebody's bad dream).

Strange how things turn round.

When i first started driving i was told not to buy Japanese cars, just stick to Ford or Vauxhall, which i/we did later on after getting the Herald and Vitesse bug out me system

Yet the worse two cars we owned were a Cavalier and the Zafira, which we bought just been a couple of years old, those days have gone :crybaby:

But as soon as we got in the Rav it just felt nice for some reason, and the drive was/is superb, not that i've driven it that is.

Jim the Kia does look nice but how does it compare in the snowy weather?

Hi Paul,

I reckon it's going to be as good as any in that respect. 4X4 Mag did an SUV group test this month & the Sportage won it (sad to say however the 4.3 RAV didn't come out too well - roll on 4.4....). I've had a look at it a while back & it's an inpressive piece of kit although the window area seems to narrow a bit too much towards the rear. You can't complain about a 7-year warranty though.

I have a kia sportage kx3 awd and so far after 5000 miles i cant say a bad word about it, very impressed. good leg room front and rear (im 6ft 1" ) Have to say very powerful 161 bhp, i have never found it wanting for power in overtaking etc. It is very well geared for driving and 6th can be used on local roads rather than most vehicles just on the motorway. It will run in 6th at 2500 rpm at 40-50mph without labouring. The fuel consumption could be better, im currently getting 35mpg on short trips with 37-38 on long journeys but according to the experts shes still breaking herself in. So hopefully get better, not that im worried it drives so well to make up for that. Whats the rav4 doing currently? prob better id bet. Its the first car i have ever owned where you get into it tired to drive a lengthy journey and get out of it refreshed, its an unbelieveable feeling :D

I find some car magazines can be very biased towards some manufacturers after all who knows what goes on behind the scenes (brown envelopes and all) ;) The new kia sportage has been sweeping up the rewards lately but they are only new on the scene and time will tell their pedigree, whereas toyota have their pedigree stamped all over them

You're absolutely right there, Kevin. You only have to look at how most car mags keep declaring Land Rovers, esp Discos, as best 4x4's despite their continuous appalling performance in JD Power, Warranty Direct , etc. surveys. Even though the web is full of sites that have been set up by disgruntled owners, the so-called journalists keep plugging these piles of junk. In this week's Autocar they've run a group test of the Q3, Kuga & Evoque and guess which won? Yep, the Evoque despite it being nearly £10k more than than the Q3, not to mention slower & heavier & irrespective of the admission in the test that the Q3 has a better engine,is better finished & is more refined. But, hey, Mrs. Beckhams' design triumph won because it's the "default premium choice" - there's objective journalism for you!

Tata / JLR must be handting out some really big brown envelopes!

i have been working in the audio industry for many years and had many blind listening sessions with those so called audio magazine journalists. well i can tell you that most of them are absolutely deaf! it's indeed all about brown envelopes & co.

anyway talking about kia, my sorento is becoming the best vehicle i ever owned in my driving period since 1980.

40 to 50 in 6Th at 2500 RPM ????????? Blimey no wonder its thirsty !! The Rav T180 is doing 2000RPM in 6Th at 70 MPH.. My engine has done 5500 miles now so still not fully loosened up.......

No diesel engine should be labouring anyway at 2500 RPM its halfway up its powerband ...
