Slipping Clutch

Hi, i'm a new member with a problem. I think i have a slipping clutch on my Rav 4 as the engine reving when i try to accelerate. The engine was replaced in june because of coolant problems and they said the clutch was in bad shape. The rav has less than 40,000 on it but i'm beginning to wish i'd never bought it. How much to replace a clutch at the toyota garage. Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the club

I'm wondering why, if the garage told you the clutch was in bad shape when they had the engine out, you did not have it replaced at the time?

Hi, I ask the same question and was told they couldn't get in touch with me though they had my phone number. It's now going to cost £960. There is nothing i can do but pay up. Thanks for the interest.

aaaaaaargh !!

Unless you want to preserve some sort of warranty, then get the clutch done somewhere else. A thousand quid is ridiculous.

I get the clutches done on my RAVs and it costs me less than £500. I do burn up clutches but then I race the cars too!

Any good independent garage who knows what they are doing can even do the clutch change without taking the engine out. Don't allow anyone to attempt to take the engine out from the top !

The guys I use do the clutch in jig time. Similarly, for the cost of a clutch, I don't understand anyone not fitting a new clutch when the engines out - crazy!

The garage I use is in Motherwell which I know is a ferry trip away - try a garage that specialises in tuning engines, or Jap cars/engines.

That sounds like very poor service from the dealer. If they knew the clutch was bad they should have waited until you contacted them if they couldn't contact you. They have knowingly and unnecessarily put you in a position that could have been avoided.

Have you spoken to the general manger of the dealer? I doubt they would want too much publicity with regard to knowingly putting cars back together with suspect/worn parts.

HI, It seems no one is interested in my complaint they said they would do the best they could to lower the price but basically tough. When I had the coolant problem another Toyota garage was for charging me to do the work, which this garage done under a 7 year warranty.

Hi

Our Toyota main dealer charged over £900 for a Yaris clutch replacement (not including fly wheel).

Other main dealers quoted £700, and said they should be able to do it under warranty.

My advice is shop around.

The clutch on my mum's yaris has gone at 9,000 and 18,000 miles.

I'm wondering why the clutch has gone too.

It's her third Toyota and she's not had a problem with the clutch before.

Others are asking about the dual mass fly wheel or diaphragm spring. Toyota seem to assume driver error. In my case they stripped down the clutch before telling me I would have to pay over £900 for a new clutch, even though the car is still within warranty and under 2 years ols.

I`d be wondering why the clutch has gone after only 40k miles?

WOW Thats terrible, I would have thought that would have been done under warranty? Especially after such low milage?

They certainly don`t make Toyotas like they used to do they?

It is possible for a clutch to last 200.000 miles.. It is equally possible for a clutch to be totally shot after just a few thousand miles and the only person responsible is the driver or drivers of the car...

There is a lady at the top of Our avenue who rides the clutch as She reverses of the drive. She then rides the clutch all the way down the avenue past our house.. I honestly cringe with mechanical sympathy.... I mentioned this to Her Husband who is a nice Chap and He replied.. She always does it always has and always will !!

While the Dealer was a bit remiss in not contacting the OP. Surely it was considered that the clutch should be replaced while the car was dismantled ???

I had the clutch assembly replaced when My engine was done 4 months or so ago. The car was at 45K miles and I thought it best to get it replaced almost irrespective of wear.. Thrust bearings can go dry and noisy. The Diaphragm springs can go hard and make the pedal heavy after all My car was over 5 Years old. The driven plate of course can be visually checked and its thickness measured . The other two components are much more difficult to asses ..

It is easy to blame the Technician or the Dealer but surely its up to the Owner to either request a new clutch is fitted while the cost is for the parts only or at least demand a report on the clutch parts before the car is re assembled ???

I too have had a new engine in our T180 at 40k. I specifically asked to be informed of the state of the clutch as I am aware of what they cost from various threads on this forum & made it clear from the start that I wanted to replace it if there was any sign of wear. I was informed that ours was as good as new & to be fair the gear change is pretty good.

Have you considered contacting Toyota GB to advise them of what has happened?

As mentioned on a different thread, my rav is in the dealers again at the mo having the engine rebuilt under warranty... The mileage is 49000 and I asked them to let me know the condition of the clutch plate... They called me yesterday afternoon to advise that it was approx 3/4 worn!

The clutch kit costs £374 inc vat and they are charging £126 labour making the total charge inc vat £500... I'm sure it's not the cheapest but it's certainly the easiest and least hassle for me. Now I have peace of mind and one less thing to worry about over the next year or so...

Hang on mate! They are ripping you off! there isn't any charge for putting in a new clutch as the box has to come off! You should olny pay for the clutch! I bought a complete genuine clutch kit with DMF for around the £500. And thats the whole lot and not just the clutch plate.

The service manager told me over the phone that the transmission does not come off when the pistons are done. The entire engine and gearbox are dropped in one piece... The £374 is the clutch kit, i.e. clutch plate, pressure plate, bearings... I can only take him at his word... I called two other toyota dealers and they confirmed the price of the clutch kit so the debate is over the other £120 - guessing this is probably one and a half hours labour with the vat...?

Are you having a new engine fitted to your car?

No. Just new piston rings and what ever else they find.... It had new pistons fitted in may this year but it's still been using oil...

Right .Then that is a slightly different matter ...

With My car a 2006 Rav at 45K miles it was a replacement engine..

Parts were just under £300 ( With Discount ) For the clutch kit comprising of driven plate, Thrust bearing. And pressure plate so everything except the DM flywheel which was inspected and deemed fit.

Labour was No charge as it was apart anyway....

They are forbidden from putting new pistons in, it should be a new engine.

Mistermena. You wouldn't get that kit for £500 from a dealer. You would be looking at least double.

Too true I very much doubt any main dealer has the experience to do a job as complicated as fitting new pistons, what ever they say. There may be the odd dealer here and there that has qualified techies to do this job. But you'll be very lucky to get one working on your car.

I know my mate. but as I bought the parts from you I knew I was getting a bit of a deal and thats why I bought them in the understanding that the main dealer price would be considerably more. but there have been in the past on eBay full Toyota kits go for £200! I was going to buy one as a spare as 'm planning on keeping the car for many years to see my children that dont live that far from you...

I find myself agreeing with Anchs on this. A new engine is what they really should be doing and not just pistons. I'd be wanting to know why a new 3/4 engine isn'y to be fitted as I'm sure that Toyota would not be wholey happy with this warranty situation. I think a call to the dealer would be of use..............

If a Dealer has replaced the pistons ect on an engine under the old scheme before that scheme was replaced by the new one where the engine gets replaced then Toyota can ask that Dealer to strip and rebuild it again...

This is because all Dealers are franchises so effectively sub contractors who have been paid to do a job of work. So Toyota are understandably reluctant to stand the cost of a replacement engine after paying out once already...

The OP says in His post above that His engine has been rebuilt under the old scheme / policy....

Exactly as stated Charlie... I pleaded for a new engine but the Toyota warranty would not stand it and the dealer was instructed to strip down, inspect and replace where required...

Fingers crossed it will be sorted now otherwise I'll be pestering for a new engine...
