Engine Problem Light

Hello Everybody,

My 2001 d4d estate has run perfectly for the past 4 years - now done 205,000 miles.

Yesterday it struggled to start turned over fast enough (new Battery earlier this year) but rather than it's usual firing on first turn, it took s good 5 seconds to start.

the glow plug light goes off after a couple of seconds as usual.

After it started it ran very rough, and after 2 minutes the engine light came on .

Once the engine warmed up it ran fine (did my usual 160 miles) but the light did not go out.

Today the same thing, slow starting no power until engine warmed up. Engine light comes on after couple of miutes, engine runs fine with normal fuel consumption once warm.

Any ideas, or do I just take it to my garage and get the diagnostics on it?

Thanks for your help

Graham

Yes you need diagnostics.

By the look of it, it sounds like glow plug problem. When did you change them last time?

If it is glow plug, get them all changed at once.

I've not changed the plugs myself and looking at the maintenance history, it looks like they haven't been done.

Are they easy to change and what kind of price should I expect?

try to open EGR valve to clean first

secondly -- change fuel filter

in third -- if nothing will be changed again then have injectors calibrated.

I've found Opie Oils are a good place to buy glow plugs. Denso or NGK/Bosch is what I'd go for...

But as said i'd be looking at changing the fuel filter and cleaning the EGR 1st...

Graham you need to find the fault code. Changing glow plug is not that hard provided that you have appropriate equipment.

As my other friends mentioned, it may be egr valve also.

But as symptom started in cold weather and at start up, it gives stronger suggestion of glow plugs.

bad glow plugs will not put engine in limp mode.

  • 4 weeks later...

My RAV4 is the same - could well be the variable vanes sticking on the turbo.

Try operating the acctuator manually a few times - I rebuild turbo's for a living but have not got round to removing mine yet
