New 15'' Wheels

I would be interested in finding out a good product for painting the brake calipers too. My wife isn't so keen on doing this, but I am. I don't want to really go RED, but something to go with Amythyst/Purple. Maybe silver (rather not, as wheels look this colour) or black? Whadya think? Anyone?

Go to a Motor Factors, Car Parts place or even Halfords & buy 'Brake Caliper Paint' in the colour that suits your taste. Choose from Brush on or a Spray on.

(Silver is nice & standard looking, brush on is fine IMO)

Clean & prepared the Brake Calipers & apply the 'Brake Caliper Paint'.

(mask or not & take as much care as suits you.)

'Top tip', if using a Spray Can, be less useless/wasteful than the guy in his video.

Job done really.

Goodday mate! Crikey! That video's pure bonza!

Thanks for that George. Quite a good video, and as for the couple of hours doing the job... I reckon it would take a lot longer than that. It would for me anyway, but that has inspired me. Now I know where we are going shopping this week. Somewhere I can buy the paint, and probably hand paint on with a brush using the layers method as shown in that video.

Already got brush's and turps. If -that's a real biggy by the way (more Aussie banter)- I do decide to do this job, then I will be sure to take progress photo's and so on to put on here. Don't hold your breath though, it may well be a summer job.

30 minutes a caliper is long enough for a tidy job.

One wheel off at a time.

Wire brush, some Brake Cleaner & degreaser, some rags, masking tape, brush, paint & brush cleaner if no disposable brush being used..

Brush on Caliper paint will cover in one coat if you paint but best spray lightly on a thin compatible primer or etch first.

Nice to get a good key, & next time you do it, get more deeper coverage on the caliper with the top cost lightly sanded..

Some paints will not take a second coat for 24 hours and do not need it if the coverage is good..

Nothing to stop the wheel going straight back on & move on to the next wheel.

the wheel does not touch the caliper.

A neater job can be done with the caliper taken off and the pads removed.(not really necessary on an iQ IMO)

Good time to get familiar with your vehicle, check pad wear etc, that the Servicing garage probably never even checked properly.

If you have the car up.. and a wheel off....

You can admire the beginning of rust on all metal parts... :crybaby:

Then it is time to put Zinc-spray and Body-Bitumen-coating on all parts... :nerd:

Often a vehicle that gets powerwashed with detergents that can be corrosive or steam cleaned and not re-lubed can end up looking like that.

Or just winter road salt & lack of maintance. (or just a Toyota sadly)

In the UK,

Maybe time now for some silicone spray, waterproof grease or similar applied before the winter road salts get into full use this year. Maybe use Spray on 'Clear Waxoyl' or Motorcycle Dry Chain Dressing.

then in the spring,

Please,

no Underseal or Stone chip guard stuff to hide & trap in the rust. (out of sight out of mind)

Do rust/corrosion removal, apply & allow to act with a Rust inhibitor & then Waxoyl or similar treatment only.

(proper job will be removal & powdercoating or enamel paint type thing.)

Remember that anything put on the 'Body structure' may invalidate your Body Corrosion Warranty with Mr T.

Not that that is worth the Paper that it is not written on. Thats Only IMHO.

Ha ha ... you are sooo right George,

Recently I read the warranty of the body of the car, it's amazing how little is defined as under warranty...

Read it carefully and take the time to think what parts are covered by the insurance....

Some parts are part of the driving parts of the car... it's excluded...

Most parts are Plastic... that does NOT rust from the inside... it's excluded...

Lots of parts are without warranty because they wear in normal use... it's excluded...

The core of the car is zinc-coated steel... included.. but will NEVER EVER rust...

Parts that are not part of the core.. is the drive-train in front.. and the wheel "upholding" part in the back... it's excluded...

Part of my corrosion is probably due to many trips from my place to Brussels in Belgium... this was in the wintertime.. and there was sooo much salt on the snowy/frozen roads ... that I drove through a "mushy pool of very salty/salted water". The hole car was WHITE... and I had to use my full can of window-wiper-fluid during one trip only... ha ha.. The window got clogged up bu white stuff from the cars in front of me...

In Belgium they probably do not have an environment ...

Good tips BTW to work on the car... thanks for that George!!!
