Hi, I'm 16 and I'm going to finish school in June. I want an apprenticeship in a garage that specializes in car tuning. I am a very huge car enthusiast however the problem is that i can't find any garages around my area that specialize in car tuning. I live in Renfrew(In Scotland) so anywhere local would be ideal however i am willing to travel to Glasgow if their is a good garage their. Can anyone please give me suggestions as to what garage i could get an apprenticeship with?

Thanks!

Any suggestions would be HIGHLY appreciated!

I will try to help you. Firstly you should have someone in your school who is in charge of careers and further education, as any apprenticeship will involve further education to some extent. They should know the options available in your area. Nobody is going to give you a job without a lot of effort from you. Secondly, now you must understand that I am not trying to put you down with my next piece of advice, I am trying to help you. Like many young people today I am afraid to say your spelling, grammar and punctuation are poor, if you apply for any post by letter, or fill in any forms, believe me when I say you are not going to impress anyone, and first impressions count. I do not entirely blame you as most teachers today seem to think that spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax are of little importance. If you wish to impress someone by letter, buy good paper and envelopes and use a foutain pen not a biro because it will mark you out from the rest. I know many people will think I am old fashioned but I know from experience what impresses employers. If you write a letter, take it to your English teacher and ask them to check for spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax. Go to W.H. Smiths, they sell paperback books on letter writing.

Good Luck to you Geoff Peace.

Its not what you know but who, have a run around to your local garages, show your face and ask them if they have vacancies for apprentices.

First impressions count (as stated above) and a letter/CV in the post doesn't even compare to actually turning up. Your much more likely to get a response from this and if they say no you can always ask if they know any other garages that are recruiting

The key is persistence

Best of luck

when i was just starting off..16 i got dropped off on seafield road AKA the motor mile a road with garages on both sides and the road was around a mile long...i went into every garage on the road i was wearing a suit and tie and had a bundle of hand written cv's...always ask to speak to the service manager, your cv has less chance of getting lost....two days later i was in for an interview on the monday after i was working at a main dealers(renault). it is all about first impressions ive tryed to give advice before and all i got was .....a suit why im going to work in a garage on that note i give up!!

so to date ive been a tec with reno, bmw, merc, fiat and now im with toyota to which im ata registered, smt, tlt and an mot tester and earning very good money....

as for working for a tuning company no offence but they dont really take on school leavers its too costly..my advice try and get into a main dealers they tend to train you to a better standard..once fully trained then look at tuning companys...you still get fast/smart cars in a dealers...i work on supras,mr2 turbos,gt4's all the way down to wee galanza turbo's..
