Coolant Problems

Came back from France last Friday and noticed the coolant level had gone down to the neck of filler tank. When I gently released the filler cap it came back up to the min line, but some had spurted out of the pressure cap before I had released it.

I put the car into Toyota to have it checked out. They said that they couldn't find anything wrong, but that there might a blockage in the rad.

I said could it be flushed out and they said it's not worth it,would be easier to put in a new rad at a cost of about £800.

The thing is once the coolant has dropped down the car drives OK,that is no over heating.

Has anybody else had this problem and how was it sorted ?

Can anybody help me please.

Radiators don't cost £800 unless you want it silver-lined.

And I find it odd that they even suggest a blockage... how many miles has the car done??

You need to do a search about the engine issues with the now famous 2AD lump that You have in Your car.. Its very very likely Your head gasket has gone in which case You will get a new engine under the Toyota extended 7 Year 118.000 mile warranty for cars fitted with this engine..

Bothy is right 800 quid for a radiator is mad... If it is down to the rad then remove it and get it sorted at a radiator specialist.......

Lastly Why would it not be worth flushing any radiator ? Especially one that cost 800 bar ????.........

Hi DOOSAN,

I had same problem and at first my local dealer didn't admitted it was a head problem, but after in contact with mother company and with the help of forum member I managed to get a new engine. So try to push hard on your dealer for an engine replacement.

cheers,

tatteam.

I too think that you could have the dredded head gasket problem. What year is the car? Have a look at the color of the pink coolant and see if there is a black tinge to it that would suggest that the head is giving up the ghost! The warranty is 7 years and 112k and like said rads dont cost £800 unless they are gold plated and lead lined with flashing green and red traffic lights in them. And thats the Christmas addition!!!

Here is a copy of the TSB (Toyota Service Bulletin) on this...

The Rav4 is on a 57 plate and has done 42,000 miles. I bought it from my local Toyota dealer second hand with 19,000 miles on the clock.

But I have noticed that the service book dose not have a stamp in it for the first service, don't know why, hope this dose not affect the warranty.

Thats not gonna make a whole lot of difference. Get the dealer to find out where it was done (Even better if it was done by them) and get them to stamp your book.

As Mistermena says Not a problem.. Just get the car to a Dealer who is familiar with the engines issues and You will very likely be the next in a very long list to be having a replacement engine !! It seems that many seem to fail at around the 40K mile .........
