Warranty Repairs... Can Someone Give Me Some More Insight?

I have to say, Toyota have been fantastic so far. I'm used to rubbish BMW where I had to pay for courtesy cars and argue with everything that I found to be wrong with my cars!

However, I took my iQ2 into my local garage last week and they were happy to carry out the following:

- Replace the EGR valve for the newer type

- Replace the Computer for the 99.9MPG version (mine has the older 60MPG maximum readout)

When I spoke to them, they told me they're replacing the above, as well as something to do with the exhaust manifold and seals. I didn't expect this so has this been an issue for some iQ's and what exactly will they be replacing?

They had to order the parts in so the work will be carried out tomorrow.

These pictures were posted in an earlier thread showing the difference between the old EGRV assembly on the left and the updated one on the right.

It would appear the exhaust manifold may have to be removed, if not changed, to fit a new EGRV. In that case new gaskets or seals would be required, so maybe that is what was referred to?

Mine goes in tomorrow for a passenger side window seal (top of door) that’s decided to hide inside the frame.

Looking at that link, it would suggest a replacement CAT, as the pipe comes off in a different location.

I wasn't aware of this issue or the 60MPG issue, so off to read all the old posts. :( I now that the most I've ever seen when cruising off throttle is 60MPG, so I'll give it a mention. Is this something that should replace or something they replace only if the customer complains about it?

DFish... if you take a look on the German and Dutch forum site... you will find that replacing the rubber has no effect on the longterm.

The answer lies in replacing the whole "glass" of the door AND an improved door-rubber-thingie.. OR adjusting the glass of the window in a different manor...

Replacing the seal is not the final option... :excl:

Perhaps of more concern from the safety point of view, is the EGRV replacement part of a recall campaign or being fitted at the discretion of dealers?

Are dealers obliged to replace it if requested by a customer?

Anyone know under what circumstances the EGRV would need replacement? Performance isues/fuel consumption?

I get poor fuel consumption. ;)

Sweet-Dentist, so there was an issue with the early models glass? Thats interesting, they told me it would take approx. 1 hour to resolve.

Fish, I noticed the 60mpg problem nearly three years ago on the first day I had my IQ and took it straight back to the dealer, who tried the demonstrator and found the same problem.

Eventually Toyota got round to a fix, by replacing the display module and this could affect all the first cars to the UK.

I don't think it was a manufacturing fault, for some reason they were meant to be that way.

If owners didn't care or didn't notice it then nothing was done.

In the same way a very erratic fuel gauge means a fault has developed in the tank sender unit/filler pipe and again this replacement is only carried out if a customer reports it as a fault. In this case it IS a definite manufacturing flaw and should be changed.

In both these cases there are replacement parts to be fitted under warranty but only if a problem is reported.

The very first cars will soon be out of warranty (3 years) as mine would have been, had I not bought another.

Dash, the EGRV replacement is meant to prevent a circumstance where the engine can lose power unexpectedly, I believe, which obviously could be very dangerous. If you look back in the threads it has been discussed a few times.

I forgot, they did mention a new cat as well. Dread to think how much it would have cost me!

Thanks for all the info. What's this fuel sender issue though? I do find mine to be very erratic so I'll get them to sort that also.

Did you request for them to replace the EGRV? If so, on what basis? I'm surprised they're willing to spend so much on parts if it's not a safety/recall issue?

I imagine that Toyota do not want it to become an official Recall,

where 100% of vehicles that could possibly be effected would need the parts replaced.

This way they might get away with only, say 10% of vehicles that may require the parts getting them.

No doubt a vehicle that can have a total loss of power is a safety issue.

**I think anyone that thinks this is a problem that might be effecting their vehicle or is going too in the future should request in Writting from Toyota UK an opinion on this.**

** I would also get something off in writting to VOSA, with Emails,if you are conserned or Toyota do not answer you in a timely manner.**

It will be then down to them to let all owners know if it could be a problem.

They obviously know now, if they are already covering the cost for 'some owners'.

Just ask, & then they can not ignore, and dealers can not ignore.

Corporate responsibility i would imagine if anything did happen to anyone, through sweeping under the carpet.

Yes, Fish,

Some of our forum members have had it replaced for about 4 - 6 times with a new one... all done in a long period of time.... and then finally they decided to do something else (=better)...

Ive had the window seals done on both sides. Something else I noticed and highlighted to my dealer was that my wing mirror mounts are starting to show corrosion, they did nothing about it even after a few moans claimed it was the shampoo I was using I highlighted that my other cars in the past have never suffered from this and its the same turtle wax, so I think I will go and have another moan soon as the plastic over the speedo housing now rattles like a *****.

With regards to the egr valve what are the symptoms, Ive had the car cut out, usually after some "spirited driving" that has casued the nanny light and sound to come on(car going sideways light and beep) in 2nd gear, then when back on a straight change up into 3rd gear and the car would cut out....anything up to 5 seconds after the spirited driving.

Posted

EGR valve symptoms are: suddenly lack of power / so no power when you need it / the car does not react to the pedal-flooring....

Posted

Yes I had gathered that, but how does it manifest itself. In my old laguna that had a knackered egr valve it would hesitate at 1800-2200 revs and lose power, above and below that was ok...ish.

The signum deisel auto I had, also had the EGR fail and that would even struggle to pull away for the first 1000rpm.

Hello everyone! This is my first post - I just got my first iQ2 (a 2009 model) last month and absolutely love it!

I was interested to read about the computer replacement. One of the reasons I went for this car was for the superb fuel economy (while still being a fun and attractive car with lots of toys!) and I have been disappointed not to have managed to go above 60mpg. My car is currently at Toyota having the brake recall work done and I mentioned the mpg issue when I dropped it off. I will get on to them when I go to pick the car up later and insist this is sorted.

Also, has anyone had any strange fuel display issues? The other day I was driving with 1/2 a tank of fuel, then it dropped straight down to one flashing bar. Could this be related to the computer upgrade required?

Hi 'Su, welcome to the forum.

With regard to the fuel gauge situation, there are two modifications than can be done and only if requested by an owner as a fault to be rectified.

One is the 60mpg issue, which involves changing the display unit, and hence your accrued mileage will be zeroed so make sure your service book is endorsed with that fact, and the other is to rectify very unpredictable fuel gauge readings which involves changing the tank sender unit and filler pipe.

To check if the display unit has not already been changed, if you lift off the accelerator going downhill then the instantaneous mpg reading should go up to 99mpg and not stop at 60mpg.

In urban driving you will be doing well to get 60mpg average so the unit could have been changed already, but the service book should show that.

I had my previous IQ's sender unit and pipe changed because after about a year of quite accurate readings it suddenly started being very inconsistent so I new something was up.

Perhaps yours is not so bad, but it may become so.Best to see about it before warranty runs out!

Both modifications were done without quibble as they are known issues.

Great cars aren't they!?

Hi John,

Thank you for your advice. I think I will need to get both modifications done. I've tried the lift off trick and the display stuck at 60 so the display unit definitely hasn't been changed. I am concerned about the fuel issue - it seems to be inconsistent but now I know this is a known fault I will insist that it is sorted out later. Definitely worth sorting out before warranty is up - I think I only have a few months left on mine.

You're right, they are great cars! I used to have an old mini and this is a very worthy upgrade to that - I love it!

Ah, the old Mini, what a car and what a pain in the neck they could be too!

I was given one when I went to University in the 60s and kept it for nearly 20 years although I had to put a new body on it and change the engine a couple of times.

The seats were original so I suppose it was the same car really.

I enjoy getting into the IQ in the same way as I did with my old Mini.

Hope you have success with your fuel gauge mods.

Lots of comment about this... has to do with the flat shape of the tank... read the miles you ride and know when to "pump gas"...

Theres no computer update, as far as I know.....

It happens in our Verso as well. Haven't investigated tank shape in that but cant see where in the body of the car it could be because its all usable space.
