Avensis Lacking Bit Of Go

Hi I'm new to the forum but thought there's not a better place than to ask fellow owners so here goes.. Just bought a 2008 2.0D4D bought 6 weeks ago, I'm happy with the car overall mines the TR so its got a bit of kit as std, its well put together with plenty of room for the family. My gripe would be its lack of get up and go, it doesn't really get going until the rev needle hits other side of 2000rpm, I assume its suffers a bit of turbo lag so doesn't really spool up as quick as I'd have expected. From memory I had a Passat 1.9TDi 130 few years ago and its in gear performance was superior especially at relatively low RPM in the higher gears. I find if cruising at say 50ish in 5th gear with my Avensis I find myself reaching for 4th gear, it just feels lethargic and heavy going at times and not particularly economical averaging mid to high 40s. I've done around 1200 miles since buying mainly commuting, so any comments from you fellow owners would be most appreciated.... :)

Hi and welcome to TOC.

The turbo usually kicks in from thw 1800 rpm and upwards. How's the condition of the air and fuel filter? Maybe a change there to help? Using a diesel like Shell V-Power helps to clean out the system after a few tank fulls of the stuff. Or if you want a quick fix then look to a fuel additive like BG244

dependent on your driving style & journeys then mid-to-high 40s for mpg is probably all that you are going to get at this time of year.

When the weather heats up again if you are doing a lot of motorway work you might manage mid 50s.

That doesn't sound like the 2.0 D4D I know and love - My brother's Corolla pulls like a train all the way to the top! (Unless the Avensis is a lot heavier than a Corolla!)

If it's really sluggish below the turbo threshold, (As Mistermena says, around 1800rpm) then that is often a sign of the EGR being stuck open and in need of a good clean and de-sooting.

Does the car get regular motorway runs or is is mostly stuck in town/city driving most of the time?

The D4Ds are great engines but they do benefit from a good thrash now and then to dislodge soot deposits from the air system and blast any crud that's built up off of the fuel injectors.

You could try filling it up with Shell V-Power diesel next time the car needs a fillup and then taking it for a random motorway/A-road joyride :D (Or 'Italian tune-up' as it has also been called  )

cheers for the replies... yeah I've taken on board all the comments it is early days I know since I've just got the car recently... Its got 40k and full Toyota service so would expect everything to be as it should, I guess it comes down to getting familiar with the car long term, as you can only get so much of a first impression on a short test drive...

I think the following needs to be considered, the old Passat had a PD (Dual Pump) engine, these units deliver all there torque in one big lump. They then run out of puff at about 3,000 RPM and the next gear is required, you then get another surge. The characteristic of this engine type won’t be achievable in a newer Avensis or any other late model Common Rail Diesel with 120-140 BHP.

That age of Diesel were the best for driving imo, now the emissions rules have changed the game and the engines just don’t feel the same as they will pull quite constantly to 4-4,500 RPM.

Also didn’t these Avensis's of this age have 116BHP? I cant see from the OP, I would also think the tank like Avensis weights a lot more more than a 10yr old Passat.

Bring back surge and then soot i say  ;)

Yeah, with most modern diesels using variable turbos, you just get a strong pull all the way, no more boot up the backside!

But we have turbocharged VVTi's for that sort of power delivery now
