Air Con

Hi - can anyone help please??

I have an Avensis 2.2 T Spirit 2007 - when I switch the ignition on the air con unit is set to auto - it is showing air blowing to feet but no fan - I can adjust the fan manually, but as soon as I press 'Auto' again, the fan turns off. This rectifies itself after a while and the blower works in automatic mode. I am just wondering if this is a fault, or have I inadvertently adjusted the auto settings (if that is possible)? I have looked at the handbook but this just says that it will select the correct fan speed in auto. I have only noticed this problem in the last week.

Any ideas anybody??

Thanks in anticipation!!

Cheers

Mark

Hi, It all depends on the temp inside the car and the desired temp you would like. Unless you press the "off" button, the fan isn't actually off, it just is very slow speed.

Re-reading, I'm don't think anything is wrong, just the way that the system works. Don't use Auto mode much myself so will have a look and see if its the same in mine too.

And as far as I'm aware you can't "adjust" the auto settings

As far as I remember when the "auto" button is pressed the air con tuns on and this is set for the windscreen and feet. As said the fan should adjust itself to get to the correct cabin temp asap and the engine will idle faster to do this. Have you cheaked the pollen filter (Behind the glovebox) to see if its clean (Over the Denso fan) and not obstructed in anyway?

What you are seeing is normal when the'Auto' light is on. In cold weather, the fan is off until the engine has been running for a few minutes (I think it lets the engine warm slightly before any changes). The fan will then gradually increase until the cabin temp is at the value set on the control. The fan will then decrease to a low to medium level. Also the direction of flow will change dependent on the outside and cabin temp. I can't explain the logic - you'd have to ask Mr T. However if you change the flow direction to say screen and feet, then that setting will be kept but the fan speed will still vary - a sort of semi-auto logic. In hot weather the fan will be set to high immediately in order to cool the cabin as quickly as possible.

That's my experience with my 2008 2.0 litre diesel TR. Hope that helps.

To all the people who have replied to my query - thank you very much!! All the info has been very helpful and it doesnt sound as if I have got much of a problem.

I will certainly try and change the pollen filter - I just need to find an owner's manual, which is harder than I first thought - have been on the internet looking through Hayes, but can only find one up to 2003 - unless anyone has any instructions on how to change one??

Thanks again

Open the passenger door and have a seat... Then open the glovebox and it will drop down and holding it (On the left hand side) is a runner. You'll need a Philips screwdriver and remove the 1 screw.

The glovebox lid will now drop down and you can pull it away from the 2 catches that hold it in place. There you'll find the white pollen filter sitting on top of the Denso fan.

Remove the old filter (Take note of how it was in) and give the area a vax! place a new filer in and put it back together again. Simples
