Hi guys,

I'm new to the Rav 4 and have just lost £6,000 on a Mercedes :crybaby: so can't afford to spend too much on a replacement car. I live on Orkney and there's no 'real' car dealers up here just cowboys. I have found one Rav 4 at a shop/garage/tractor seller and I've included a description below with 3 pictures. Would be greatful if anyone can supply any advice as to the price etc.

04/54 TOYOTA RAV 4 2.0 TD D4-D XT4 - £8550.00

In Metallic Grey/ Silver, with grey leather seats, 85000 miles, 16" alloy wheels with wide wheel arches, Roof rails, Front fog lights, Electric windows front & rear, Electric sunroof, automatic air conditioning, Remote central locking, alarm with interior protection, vehicle stability control, traction control, 4x4 ability for all weathers, towbar and electrics. Good condition. Newly serviced.

Any info will be very greatfully received.

Many thanks,

Mike

P.S. If you know of any Rav 4's in Aberdeen please let me know.

I would normally agree with you, but look at this RAV'S 200 miles from Wick crazy winter prices and a very limited choice! Using a London Postcode doesnt change the prices much, it must be the winter values.

I wouldn't pay that price either

It's all down to supply and demand. There ain't a lot of choice way up there in Orkney I imagine

As for the car - it looks well kept but listen very carefully for rumbles and rattles which may indicate a DMF starting to go. Would be worth checking to see if it's already been replaced as it could be a 2K job if you are unlucky..........

Description mentions towbar and electrics - can't see evidence in photos

Hi guys,

Thanks very much for the prompt responses... Much appreciated!

Thanks also for the links and info.

I'm originally from England and moved up here 5 years ago. The house is up for sale and I'm moving back. Orkney is not the place for me!

The weather has been very bad... well it's blown a few houses down, sunk boats and blown my brick built garden wall to bits! The four Oak gates just flew in the air and I can't even find the one... same with the 'For Sale' sign - God only knows where it is!

We moved up here at the same time as 4 other families and are the last ones standing. The last family went 18 months ago... back to Halifax in Yorkshire!

Oh and by the way, the winter weather hasn't put the prices up... This guy has had the Rav 4 in for ages. I asked him if he could do a discount because I'd no car to trade in and I was a cash buyer... His reply? "Well I could may be knock £100 max off it if that would help, but I don't really want to... I'd sooner give you a months warranty if that sounds alright?"

Here's the website: www.erlendjtait.co.uk - Great site don't you think

Thanks again guys!

Mike

Hi Mike,

I've often thought that I would like to move up to Orkney but never went through with it. I've been going up there for holidays, always during the summer, but after talking with the locals realised that the winters can be very demanding. We're going back again in August for two weeks.

It's one of the few places I've come across where sheds and outhouses are secured to the ground with steel cables and concrete blocks!!

I hope you find a RAV soon mate. The guys price seems pretty ambitious.

As others have said no matter how good the car is this is a crazy price. If you bought and had to sell you'd be losing £3k just like that.

Cheaper to buy a plane ticket and buy from a Toyota dealer-have a look at thier websites.

Yep. Thats what I would be doing ! I went from Scotland to deepest south Wales to buy My Jag. The only S versions in Scotland were 5K more !! Plus I bought of the Chairman of the Jaguar Owners club..... A car with 13.000 miles on in mint original condition... I would travel pretty much anywhere for the right vehicle especially if I'm saving hundreds let alone thousands !!!!

Mike I symathise with your predicament, I live on the Isle of Man and we have a similar situation, probably not just as bad as yours, we pay well over the odds for our Cars.

I was looking for a Rav4 for my mate and put it,s details on our forum and was told in no way was it worth the price they wanted for it (and that was a main Dealer).

I usually search the NW of England for what I require, and find it pays dividends.

Funny that about the Guy going back Halifax, thats where I,m originally from but defo will not be going back, will put up with 90mph wjnds and gales.

Regards Clare

I went to South Wales to buy a landrover and ended up having to take a ride with the AA. Got my own back when I sold my Jag to some guy in Wales

Too right, we saved 2k by going from Sheffield to Southampton for the Verso van. Yes it wiped out 2 days but its worth it for 2k let alone 5k!

Hey guys,

Sorry for not getting back sooner. I'll reply to everyone later.

Can I ask for advice on the latest situation...

The garage has offered now to take £1,050.00 off the price and he say's it has just had a major service and the car has a slightly higher mileage but has recently had a new dual mass clutch fitted (£850), a new turbocharger(£980), a new MOT and is therefore in very good mechanical condition. It is an XT4 model with a high level of specification and the condition is good throughout.

What do you think guys?

Thanks for all the feedback so far,

Mike

Still not cheap but if the car is as nice as it looks and it is a nice looking car and You really want it then ask for another 500 quid off and go for it !!

It is so easy to be guided by the book and buy a car that needs a load spending on it.. But if This car is genuine and an up close inspection proves is in absolutely superb condition ( They all look good in pictures) then its not so bad..... Ask for more they can only say no !!

Hiya Mike, I purchased a model almost identical to this a couple of months ago, XT4, leather seats..etc immaculate throughout with 12 month ticket, full 1 year warrenty (It had had a recent service and the Cam belt changed at 75000m) So far (touch wood) this diesel has been fantastic and with perm 4WD is a joy to drive! It is a lot better than my previous petrol Honda CRV in every way! I am averaging about 42mpg which is not bad at all for this type of vehicle! (Honda was 28mpg) small pic below of my motor taken when changing the light bulbs to xenon ones!

Hope this helps mate?... Now the bad news for you...I paid £5200 with 95000 on the clock!!!

Steve
