Avensis Satnav

Hi,

Further to my earlier email regarding repair of my Avensis T3-S satnav, I'm advised by Toyota GB that the faulty bulb cannot be replaced as the unit is sealed. My only option is to buy a new satnav unit - at £1,900 plus VAT!

I've always wanted a Tom Tom which I'm assured is ten times better (and cheaper) than the built-in rubbish the Avensis has - whoever heard of a satnav which doesn't accept postcodes!

Thanks to anyone who replied earlier.

Regards.

If you can change the voice, I never found a way of doing it. I believe this was Toyota's first attempt at in-built satnavs and they failed dismally! I was on the verge of updating the disk at £150 (my current version is 2001-2004 - wouldn't you think the dealer would mention that during one of the services?) but thank heavens I didn't!

I wish you better luck with your Avensis than I had with mine. As a Toyota owner of just over 30 years, this is the worst car I've ever had. Never again.

On eBay I've seen TNS 9010 go for £260... And the TNS 500 series for £500! So £1900 plus VAT is a bit to much in my book. You could buy another car for that kinda wonga...

I suspect the dealership couldn't be bothered and quoted me the price to bring a brand new unit over from Japan. I have a TNS300 and can't find one anywhere on the net.

I have been very pleased with all my Toyotas over the last 30 years but the Avensis is the worst. Only had it three years and I've got wind noise from the offside front window which makes you feel that either the window or the door are not properly shut; the cabin doesn't seem to be insulated too well and road noise is quite bad at speed; the VSC and TRC warning light keeps coming on and the dealership cannot find out why (but they CAN tell me that the vehicle is unstable when this happens!); the accelerator (I have an auto) is jerky and you can't brake smoothly - there's always a jolt as you come to a stop; in rainy weather the wing mirrors are useless as the water obliterates what you can see, and the rear windscreen washer seems to spit out thick liquid - even though water was put in! Apart from that, I'm quite pleased with it.

There's a Sat Nav repair service which may be worth a look:

http://www.ebay.co.u...#ht_2699wt_1163

But what do they do for that cost? And whats the charge for other stuff? Tbh I had this paged saved on my eBay for months but thought it could be a bit of a rip when you can buy a used sat nav off Fleabay. But there again you pays your money and takes your chance!

Thanks for the info, Gazza. However, I have been told by Toyota GB that my unit (early version, b/w, no postcodes, crap etc) is a sealed unit and cannot be repaired. I was encouraged to buy a Tom Tom or Garman by the guy I was speaking to because a new Toyota unit would cost in excess of £2,000.

I'll call the number in the ad, but tried one yesterday which claimed to be able to fix satnavs, only to be told "we don't deal with in-built models".

Cheers.

Hi Toy Yoda,

Sorry for late reply. BOTH LEDs in the Satnav unit have now gone. I'm trying to find a way of removing it. Does anyone have any idea?
