Just been told by MOT place that handbrake cable needs replacing for MOT, and that this involves dropping the fuel tank, exhaust and propshaft!

Is this correct?

According to my manual, MK1 RAV4 just remove the prop shaft, exhaust, fuel tank, heat sheilds, M8. I suggest you invest in a Haynes Manual, save you loads of money, How much is the garage quote?

It's a mk2 3 door, but I don't suppose that makes any difference. It's a garage job, can't be bothered messing around in the cold anymore with cars.

Are you sure it just does not need tightening? It can be tightened from the back and front? I`d mark the handbreak cable secretly so you know they have actually changed it.

So many pirates around these days its unbelivable.

No, if he says it needs doing then it will. Known him for years and he's always been good.

One thing you do not mess around with unless you know what your doing is brakes, you can adjust them but if it snaps "Good Luck when you park up" :help:

Leave it in gear maybe?.............I never trust a handbrake even in working condition.

I've removed the tank on the 4.1 which is the same set up on the 4.2.

The handbrake cable is clipped up above the tank - so to remove the tank the exhaust and propshaft need to come out, which also means the centre prop bearing.

This also means unclipping petrol and brake lines.

Whilst the tank is out, get him to give it a good clean and maybe a coat of anti-rust if need be. Also check the brake pipes. Look at the petrol lines for corrosion and the petrol filler pipe and breather. Disturbing these pipes will weaken them if they are already corroded.

It is a messy job unless you can work with the car on a ramp - I did it with the thing jacked up out on the driveway - not something to be done outside nowadays !!

Thanks for the comments guys, hopefully going to get it done next week. It's a real pain because the cars running better than it has for a long time just now. Always worry with jobs like this that the car just won't feel quite right afterwards. Irrational I know...

I recently had the handbrake cable changed on my 4.2.

I asked if they would have to drop the tank but they said no they had a tool they slid along the top of the tank which they used to unclip it.

They then used the old cable to pull the new one through.

Cheers Jim

Yeah, I allways leave my Rav in gear but it still needs to get through an M.O.T.

this is not the worst job to do.. had to do one of mine last year before test. Cost me about 28 quid off e-bay... Mr T Suggested I give him 97 pounds..... couldn't help feeling chuffed when walking away with my MOT cert.....

if your doing it there are a number of Clamps that are a nightmare....
