Reverse Lights Staying On

hi.

anybody had this problem with the reverse lights on a 2002 avensis.

The lights remain on even though the ignition is off with the key removed and the car locked.

If the car is left in reverse gear when parked the ignition light remains on even though the key has been removed.

Any help is much appreciated.....thanks

There should not be any voltage to the reverse lights when the car is off. That means that somehow you do get 12 v to the lights. You should start looking at the wiring from the Battery to the reverse lights. Then you might find the fault. I don't have the wiring diagram here right now.

What happens when you pull the fuse which relates to the reverse light? Does it still remain lit? If it still remains on you will need to keep pulling fuses until the light goes out. There are some circuits which are permanently live and others which are switched on through the ignition switch.

It's possible that someone has rigged the wiring for the reverse light up to a circuit which is permanently live. i.e. something like the interior lights or clock circuit.(unlikely but possible) The problem is likely to be found in the light cluster. Remove this and all may become clear. Corrosion or Micky-mouse re-wiring.

The reverse switch is faulty.

to check is easy

Look at the gearbox.

should be 2 electrical connectors.

1 3Pin - speed sensor

1 2 pin reverse switch.

unplug connector from switch and see if lights go off.

If the lights stay on then the fault is probably in loom.

Then try this

switch ignition on and in reverse gear with wiring loom

connector unplugged from gearbox switch. bridge the two connections with a

screw driver.

If lights turn on then problem is with switch.

what was it ?

It was a faulty switch as you said.My daughter has the same model has me.....so we exchanged switches and the problem was solved.

I got a switch off a scrap car and it is working o.k. I will send off for a new switch just to make sure......many thanks for your info.
