Rav4 T180 - New Engine?

Can anyone help me?

I have 2007 Rav4T180 that developed head gasket problem. (Engine coolant loss and squirting all over engine bay) Bought with 31,000 miles and full toyota service history 6 months ago from a Toyota dealer and it came with 12 months warranty. Toyota GB have agreed to replace the engine with a reconditioned engine, Now is reconditioned new new or new used and who supplies toyota with these engines????

I've read some other posts on here and people are getting new engines as opposed to reconditioned engines, when they start using excessive oil and coolant is leaking. Should i be getting a new engine??

Any pointer or advise would be greatly received.

You should be getting a NEW 3/4 engine! This is really a complete engine from bottom to top. The other stuff like turbo (Unless that has been damaged due to the engine fail) will be used again the Air con comp and the alternator ect. This engine is built in Japan and sent over to get plumbed in and your one gets sent back by the dealer to Toyota. You'll also get a new D-CAT and 5th injector as well as new EGR valve.

Have you seen the TSB (Toyota Service) on this? Take a search on here or I'll post one up for you.

My car is a 2007 Rav 4 that only came with a 3 yr warranty as standard when new. We bought from a toyota dealer this summer that gave us a 12month approved used toyota warranty. The car has only done 34K with full toyota service history. Should I still be getting the NEW 3/4 engine? If so how do i argue my case with the dealer as they are only providing a reconditioned engine?

Thanks in advance.

The extended warranty that Toyota have put in place is there for the known head gasket issues(And the EGR valve) for the 2AD (And other) engine which you have. This covers cars upto 7 years old and 112k on the clock. Take the TSB in and get them to fit a NEW engine and not a re-con one. Toyota have been the only marque of car that I've known to look after there customers after the initial warranty has expired.

You have the same rights as others on here to claim this warranty. Stand your ground (Be polite of course) and explain that you are aware of the TSB which covers your car as it falls within the time scale and milage.

PM me if you want any help over the phone.

Hi Nicholas,

Maybe you are getting bogged down in the word "reconditioned", which somebody may have inadvertently used either you or the dealer....if your car engine is affected by the problem in this TSB, what you will get back is a new engine in the main....the dealer is not allowed and would not be paid to rebuild or recondition your engine. It will come from Japanshire on an exchange basis with your dealer.

With a name like Nicholas, and Father Toyota more than likely bringing you a new engine, what a nice Christmas you are in for, mate !!!!! (Would think it will be well into January before resolved, so Happy New Engine....)

Big Kev

I am curious here as I thought I had read some where (after I had mine done) that the engines are reconditioned by toyota & shipped back out as in some one will end up with my old engine & I already have some one else's??

I say this because when I picked mine up after getting done & removed the cover at the top of the engine, I was expecting to see all new shiny parts but I didn't which leads me to believe that they are not brand new straight out of the box so to speak as if you compare mine to a brand new motor in a brand new car then you can clearly see the difference.

Also, I don't believe that I had a new D-CAT and 5th injector as well as new EGR valve as referenced by Mistermena above - having said that, I didn't experience any coolant problems just excessive oil consumption which would probably explain why I didn't have these parts replaced.

Quite right Blue

If we take the meaning of the term reconditioned then it could mean that some parts are re-used. Kingo has already told us that some blocks are re-used and that is essentially the main part of the engine. They would therefor only use a new block if either the old one is serviceable or they are short of core stock (not enough old units to rebuild). The modifications revolve mainly around the pistons to prevent oil consumption but all the series mods of head gaskets and improved sealing of the crank, timing case and sump will also be included. There is no reason why the crankshaft, camshaft and some of the other main parts could not be re-used.

I have overseen 3 engines reworked and regardless of how much new content they have had, the engines are quieter and use no measurable oil. Don't get hung on terminology and let them get on with it.

The dealer told me that i would be getting a reconditioned complete engine with new piston rings and gaskets, with maybe if needed EGR valve + ECU update! I immediately had visions of a grotty workshop with an old fella on a lathe fixing bust engines as cheap as possible. If the engines are reconditioned in japan and shipped back to uk, are they covered by any toyota warranty against defects/workmanship??? Considering i only have a further 6 months left on my approved used car warranty, im a bit concerned if it happens again will i be covered under the TSB??

As my engine number will change i guess i will have to inform DVLA and get me V5C amended to suit the new engine serial number? So i guess i should be getting a copy of the invoice to forward to DVLA to prove that my new engine is not stolen or from a car involved in crime etc.

Once again thanks for all you speedy replys, such a good source of information.

I've now spoken to the Toyota dealer this morning and they have confirmed to me that I'm in fact getting a new 3/4 engine from Toyota GB which is why they said reconditioned as opposed to 100% new. I still have to notify the DVLA of the engine number change but it's a small price to pay for the reassurance of a 'new' engine. Thanks all for your help and advice.

Can I just ask what the 5th injector does and where does it sit in the engine?

There's not a fifth cylinder is there?

The 5th injector is bolted onto the D-CAT to clean it and reduce emissions. Its not in one of the cylinders like the normal fuel injectiors.

Not far off. It's fitted in the end of the cylinder head.

Hi Nicholas,

I don't have a 4.3 but have followed this engine replacement issue with interest as it does seem (as someone else mentioned above) that Mr. T is going the extra mile to keep the customer satisfied and that bodes well for the rest of us.

Re your warranty, my experience is that you can purchase Toyota's own extended warranty annually up until the car is 7 years old. This warranty is very good being virtually the same as the original 3 year warranty it came with new. In some cases they do promos whereby you can purchase multiple years in advance and that can take the warranty beyond the 7 year limit if you take up such a promo before the car hits 7 years of age - sorry if that sounds confusing. We've had the extended warranty on both our 4.2's & it has been cost effective owing to the failures of EMS sensors and their cost plus the fact that it comes with Club Toyota membership which includes AA recovery, courtesy car, emergency accomodation, accident management, etc.

Good luck with the new engine.

Jim
