Hi all,

Just bought my 1st Yaris. I,ve had loads of Toyotas over the years but never a VVti and i,ve heard a few rumours about it being nicknamed the "oilburner".

The car is an 03 colour collection 1000cc and has 45k on it with almost full Toyota S/H. Is there anything i should be doing as a precaution to prevent any later problems?

Cheers.

Hi Jonjosar.

I'm on my second Yaris and I never had any problems with either of them. I've never heard of Yarises being called oilburners, never seen anything on here about that either. Anyway enjoy your Yaris

Diesels are sometimes referred to as oil burners, but that's just a generic term for all diesels, not specific to the Yaris

Clean around the petrol filler cap and the pipes in the wheelarch with a hose. Use a gloved hand to remove wet mud.

When thoroughly clean and dry, cover with a wax based rust proofing compound like Black Hammerite.. lots of it. (got to be viscous as it gets lots of water thrown at it.

The pipes rust with age. £100+ new... Not many good ones secondhand.

Change pollen filter... (it probably is filthy - under and behind glove box).

Rust proof minor engine and suspension brackets.

Check brake fluid for water/change it..

Whenever I buy a car I always take it to a garage I trust and ask them to give it a good look over. When I bought my Yaris I immediately had it looked over and serviced. Put a good fully synthetic oil in there too!

Three years of ownership and 50,000 miles later and no problems whatsoever! [Except for a couple of niggles...]

Thanks for those suggestions. i have a tin of spray "Waxoyl" here so i,ll do anything that looks a bit rusty.

I,ve not heard the Yaris called an "oilburner" more the corolla and avensis VVTI engines and was just wondering if there were any generic problems with the engine, ie clogging the oil pick up pipe etc.

In this case I think he meant that the car burned off engine oil, which has been a problem for a few people with the higher capacity VVTis and D4Ds but us Yarisers with our tiny engines have been mostly free from such problems :D

Engine-wise, all three Yaris engines have been nigh-on bullet proof so far. Just look after them with regular servicing and they keep going and going :D

I baught my second Yaris a year ago no regrets I've had other makes and nothing compares to the t sport small nippy and comfortable with the sports interior. Was looking under it and notice surface rust on engine cradle and back axel there coming out for sand blast and powder coating. Goin to check my fuel pipe today I never knew that and don't fancy a 100 bill plus labour.

Thats great to hear about the engines. TBH, i,ve had my RAV 4 06 D4d engine replaced under warranty already but it hasnt put me off Toyota.

This will probably be my 10th one (all different models). Wont be my last one hopefully.

Ive heard from a couple of owners who tell me to watch out for a rotten sump as apparently it can rust quite badly.

Has anyone here had any experience of this fault and if so,is it a case of repair or replace?

I replaced a rotten sump on a Peugeot 106. Unless the rust is localised, repair is very dodgy as you get seepage through weak bits.. (The 106 was very rusty and after jacking under it (with wood) it started to leak, Replaced with £5 one from scrapyard).

Yaris replacement looks ok... might have to remove exhaust if not enough clearance.. Just lots of silicone sealant as no gaskets..

If you do want to repair it, cleanliness and a plate to cover the hole and plastic metal or similar (I use JB Weld for these kind of jobs)...And leave to harden for 24 hours.

Not a winter job unless you have a garage - preferably heated. (A pit helps as well!)

Cheers, TBH, i wouldnt bother going through the job of removing it to weld it. False economy in my book. Fix it once and fix it right. The dealer has put it through an MOT for me so its now got a full years test on it.
