2006 Rav 4 - Driving Characteristics?

Hi.

First of all, what a great forum. I've found out so many new things about my new Rav. :)

I purchased a 56reg XT5 back on October from a main Toyota dealer.

Now, I was used to a Ford Focus TDCi (115bhp model) and my wife's car is a Mondeo ST TDCi. Both these cars a very nimble machines especially when the turbo kicks in at 1800rpm....woooosshhh!

I sold the Focus and jumped into the Rav. Now, is it just purely me, but the Rav feels ssssoooooo much slower??

I feel the characterisc is so much different to the Fords (and other 'cars')

Yes, I know that it's a larger machine and has the option to drive 4 wheels when required, but I thought that I'd just ask!

The last time that I drove a machine like this was over 15 years ago (Mitshi Shogun 2.5litre)

Driving off in 1st gear, I feel that I can't change to 2nd until 20mph. Anything below that, the turbo seems to take ages to spool up. All 'cars' that I've driven I've always changed into 2nd around 10mph (for economy reasons). 20mph - 2nd into 3rd, 30mph - 3rd into 4th and 45mph - 4th in to 5th.

I can't do that at all in the Rav.

I have noticed that the Rev counter in these go to 7K rpm and the Fords only to 5000rpm, so have you to 'thrash' these Ravs a bit more to get them up to speed?

It's maybe plain and simply that I'm not used to it yet!

Don't get me wrong, it's a great machine. All the toys and great MPG!!!!!

Thank you! :D

hello matey

RAV is not a race car. the race ferrari dept is outside :) -- the rav is for pleasure mate. if you expected good start then 2.4 ltr vvt-i would suit. but 2.0 ltr vvt-i also starts OK, as for me. we all drive the cars but at diferent cost !!!! per km or mile. Cheers/Igor

Welcome to the club.

The 4.3 likes to lug at 1500-2000 rpm.

It might just be use but try to drive another if you can just to compare.

I'm having logging in problems hence the slow reply!!

Yeh, it maybe that I'm not used to it.

Out of interest, what speed do you change gear in all gears, if you are pulling out into a main road?

I change up really early (1000-1500 rpm) as it smooths out the gear change especially low down the box. They are quite happy to lug as long as they are running right.

The overboost on the TDCI's maks them feel quite quick as they dump all the torque early on and then run out of puff. Modern diesels do feel as if they lack the same amount of performance, however they will happily cleanly rev to the red line and offer the same performance just in a less dramatic way, no surge and soot anymore.

Whether your RAV has any issues i would not dare hazard a guess with all these RAVA's around.
