Look okay but... what about the airbags stuck under those seat covers? There must be a way around that. Dave, over to you?

Does your iQ have airbags in the seats,

Is it the one under the base of the passenger seat?

http://www.greencarsite.co.uk/econews/toyota-iq-safety.htm

All the waterproof seat covers i have these days are sold as suitable for seat airbags with velcro & elastic openings,

never thought of one being fired from below though.

George, I think they are in the side of the seat uprights, like the backrest part of it, but stored in the side...

When I did my leather conversion, the covers come with sewn in airbags tabs indicating where the airbags are located on the seats. As the leather covers are an original stock item, one would assume the airbag mechanism is sufficient to operate through the leather, thus also would assume it could punch its way through a thin seat cover. Unless you guys think otherwise

YES indeed David...

Last Monday (Dec 19) I witnessed a car crash...

One car turning left hit by a car coming straight from the other side of the crossing... The turning car had actually hardly any speed and the incoming car could be going about 50 miles/hour,

The impact was enormous... both the fronts of the cars were gone. On the picture you can see the turnig car... due to the impact it has turned 180 degrees around, heading the other way.

But, finally my point, only of the turning car the airbags (had only 2 vs 9 in ours) had gone of.

AND.....

It looked like the remnants of an explosion (witch it actually is)... the whole car looked like on fire ... because of all the smoke... incredible amount of "gunpowder" like mist. It really looked as if the car was going to burn... but it was the remnants of the airbags going off.

Due to the impact resorption and all the pieces flowing of... there was one driver with a little neck trouble and a lady in the incoming car (NO airbags gone off) with a crack in a bone of her wrist.

So these bag really go off with a BIG bang...

Have seen similar myself. However, unless I was told they would for certain go through the material, I would have that nagging feeling they would not work properly, and that the Insurance people would see it as a get out of paying free card because you covered the airbags with a non standard covering. You know what they are like, any chance not to pay out.

So, this accident was caused by a woman was it? Is that a politically correct thing to ask? Does it matter who caused the accident? Of course it does. Don't know about women's insurance costs where you are Peter, but here, it's a little biased towards women, as they are supposed to be better drivers. Funny thing is, just lately, when another car is up my chuff the driver is a woman. Age doesn't matter either. Young or old. Usually, it's in the lower speed limit areas too, 30mph, 40mph (which I stick to now I'm over 50). See, they just want to cruise through everywhere at speeds between 40 and 50mph. Still, if we get up their chuff they complain and !Removed! like hell. Women. Oooops, sorry, Persons!

Yes... I would not cover it by anything other than is recommended and accepted by Toyota..

And,

Nope...I have to disagree... It is allowed there to go 50 miles an hour!!! Even over the crossing!!!

In this case the "male" turned left and the "female" had right of way.... Only thing to complain about, is that seen the weather conditions, one would drive more carefully.. even if one has right of way...

I see 50% M and F... But here in Holland there are more accidents happening by youngsters than older persons. So they pay a larger/higher insurance money.

Point was.. that airbags go off with a very expanding gas explosion ... althus giving an extreem amount of "smoke".

This is a photo of the other's car... hardly to be seen... a Renault Laguna I think...

But you can see the weather conditions at 17:00 PM... At the far right you can just see the tail of the other car (that was making the turn to the left of the photo..).

Yesterday I went to a funeral. Quite sad because my old boss retired end of November and his wife died 9 days later. On the way there a car 3 cars in front of me was hit at high speed from the left hand side by a police car, possibly doing 50mph. Totally wrote off the whole front of the civilians car. Both occupants injured if not dead. one was half through the windscreen . The police driver and co-driver and just got out and stood there, then one of them got on the radio. Didn't see any airbags operate. The police never even went to the people in the car.Just stood back whilst occupants of other cars gave assistance. Don't know what the outcome was .Just highlighting massive side impact no airbags deployed 58 plate car

What a shame for your old boss, and his wife of course. That really is sad.

Are police no longer trained or expected to offer immediate first aid in case they may get sued at a later date?

There was a tragic case near here last year when a young lady fell 50ft down a disused mine shaft on her way home from work, taking a short cut across a field, and was injured so couldn't get back out. The fire brigade attended but the officer at the scene refused to allow his men to go to her aid as they were not "trained" to use ropes in that way.

She died from exposure and shock some hours after falling in.

Things have to change if this is going to become the norm.

Listening to the radio in the morning there used to be very few accidents affecting rush hour travel in this area , but now, every morning, there seem to be at least three accidents causing major disruption and road blockages reported on the traffic bulletins.

It is quite frightening out there. Why can't the police lay into these tailgaters who must be a cause of a lot of these shunts.

It is my experience having worked in the MET Police in London for 3 years, that The police also cause a lot of accidents. My Radio workshop was above a Police garage and nearly every day a Police car was brought in wrecked after a pursuit. Although I think the directive has changed since the 80"s. In the incident yesterday, the Police car came onto the small round a bout from nowhere. I was looking in the general direction of the siren's and he still came from nowhere. There is little doubt that he even saw it was a roundabout as he came round an obscured bend at about 50. Anyway off subject.
