I also had a GPS unit that plugged into a laptop with the software on the laptop, ok if you had a passenger to hold the laptop but a bit dangerous sat on the passenger seat on its own. The screen was plenty big enough to see and it did have a voice, the trouble was if you went off your preset route, although it recalculated a new route, it stopped talking to you. A bit like the missus when you ignore her LOL.

I remember using Autoroute on my Psion 3c and 5mx! And what a technological leap forward it seemed in 1998 when I bought my first car with factory fitted satnav and consigned those devices to a desk drawer!

Next time I buy a car, I won't be going for factory-fitted satnav, preferring the excellent implementation of Tomtom on my iPhone, which - given that Tomtom started out by developing software for the Psion palmtops - seems like the wheel coming full circle!

I still have a Psion 5mx in use on my desk at home. I bought a couple of spare 5mx, one from the last ever production run where no one was sure how many were going to be made due to the limited supply of components. I seem to recall being about 200th on the waiting list for that last production run from one of mail order companies that sold Psions. Looking back maybe I should have bought more, but I had always assumed that someone would eventually bring out a new product that would fill that niche.

Yes, Palmtop wrote some good quality software. I still use one of their programs today.
