Am going to look at a 2004 Rav4.2, one owner 4300 miles yes 4300 miles at local main Dealer.Sounds too good to be true, Gold metallic so would presume has silver wheel-arch trims and bumpers. If I can get a decent price for my Cooper S I,ll get it.By the way it,s petrol which I,m not bothered about. Bet you any money it,s gone before i get up there

An excited Clare

Sorry it,s £ 7995 and it,s 3 door

If that crazy mileage of 4300 is actually genuine, Clare, the negative side of that is what damage has been done to the car either sitting unused, or even worse, in poor long term storage conditions....?

Big Kev

Hi Clare,

Bearing in mind the scarcity of 3-dr 4.2's, that price isn't bad. BK makes a good point about the low mileage however and it would probably be a good idea to ask some searching questions about why it has only averaged circa 600 miles p.a. One little old lady owner who only drove it to church on Sundays perhaps - bit stereotypical but it does happen. If it has a service history that should give you a clue about its progeny. Is it possible it has had a replacement speedo at some point?

If it was me however, I'd go for it (my 54-reg 3-dr that I bought in May only had 27K on it but it's been fine - touching wood furiously) but just insist that the dealer gives it a full ( major) Toyota service as part of the deal (this should ensure that brake fluid & air filter is changed as well as oil/filter) and then do a couple of oil & filter changes in the first 1,000 miles to make sure everything is sparkly in the engine's innards. I'd also make sure that the tyres are OK since, at that low mileage, they could still be the originals and would be comprehensively past their use by date.

Good luck,

Jim

Thats right low milage. But it could be the steal of 2011 if its a genuine honest motor. Would love to see some pics and of the engine bay

Check old MOT`s via internet to confirm mileage.

Check underneath to see if mileage coresponds, I would think it should be spotless bar some surface rust.

If fact it should really look and smell like new inside.

Sounds OK :) (and just made me realise I sold my 2005 RAV4 too cheap  )

IMO, I think on the 4.2, Petrol is much better idea then diesel for two reasons - 1) the Dreaded DMF potential issue in the future, and 2) if it were a diesel, you would be looking at a belt change due to the age rather then mileage, which is not needed ever for the Petrol of course.

and the 3 Door RAV4.2 facelift version (round fogs) is possibly the best looking RAV4 ever

Calm down, it's only mileage!! Just kidding, Paul.

Speedos can be changed for legitimate reasons, e.g. faulty, damaged in another repair, etc. but in that case the dealer will be careful to list the replacement and the original mileage on the invoice. Then, in Toyota's case, it will be recorded on the Toyota GB dB so it will be obvious to any other Toyota dealer who repairs/services the car. As you infer, the service record and old MoT's will confirm if the mileage on the car is legit.

If you are buying from a Toyota dealer, they should include a mileage and accident certificate in the paperwork, i.e to confirm that the car 's mileage is correct & that it hasn't been the subject of an insurance write-off.

Sounds a cracking car Clare and I truly hope its what You want.. Be sure to check it out very carefully though.. There has to be some checkable history with a car of that age and mileage.. IE One Owner who for some reason has not used the car ..... Service book should be an interesting read.. I wonder how many service stamps are in the book ? The car should still be serviced once a Year even if its only done a few hundred miles in each Year..

The Tyres will need a careful look over to see if any distortion or cracking of the tyre walls has taken place due to the car being stood perhaps in one position for a long time.. A good look inside the rocker cover for signs of condensation is also a good idea.. Brake fluid will need changing of its not been done . If it has been done then this would be a good sign of essential maintenance having been done despite extremely low miles..

A car of this mileage and respective price should be in original paint.. So examine every panel 1 panel at a time checking for pin shrinkage marks dust in the paint colour match ect ect. I would also expect almost No stone chipping especially on an IOM car..

Seats should be Mint and No wear at all to the steering wheel or pedal rubbers.. Check the back of the steering wheel where You would not usually look. Greasy residue in this area when the front of the wheel is mint shows something.....

Pictures or a link would be great ??

Well been up and had a test drive, the mileage had been wrongly posted in the advert (Main dealer believe or not!!!!!)It had done 43000 miles. It was immaculate both inside and out,face-lifted 4.2 with round foglights, an XT3 version. Then I checked the service record, last service was at 24000 miles (2 services previous to that-all main dealer), it had not been service since brought onto the island. Believe it or not it was originally bought from Lindops at Queensferry.

Had a test drive seemed OK except for 2 things the exhaust was defo on way out and when you changed gear (accelerating) it sounded as though you where riding your clutch (???????), don,t know whether that signifies the clutch is going.

Anyway to cut a long story short I was disappointed to say the least, but will keep trying.

Was looking (rather drooling) at a new Rav4 XTR they had in the showroom £24000,so my Dad made me make a quick exit outside!!!!!!!

Thanks for input Regards Clare

Awww... Shame Clare as it sounded like such a good buy an all. Comes to something mind when a main dealer advertises a motor with the wrong milage. Honest mistake ;)

ok the car is supposed to be out of dealers lookout for years for the reasons of possible damage and withdrawing from warranty.

it is understood the milage could be adjusted (????) and body repaired/re-painted. be very carefull. it is my opinion. cheers

You can get 2 years Toyota Extended Warranty still on that age car, so IF they sorted out the clutch and did a full service AND came done in in price by maybe £1,500 would be a decent deal I would think.

Never been to the IOM, but I would guess the clutches tend to get a bit of a hard time generally with your terrain and busy town driving?
