Oil Consumption Problem Fix

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone with knowledge of short motor replacements can help me.

I have a 2003 1.8vvti Avensis, and in January this year it wad fixed, becauase it was burning shed loads of oil.

I didn't get any paperwork, and the only visible sign of any work is a green dot on the dipstick. I wasn't given a new engine number and was told it didn't need 'running' in.

Would that suggest only the pistons/rings were replaced? I'm going to be selling the car shortly and want to know what was actually done.

It hasn't used any oil in the last 11 months by the way :-)

the problem is not in rings matey but in overheating of each piston due to missed cooling (by oil jet).

the cure is cooling of each piston but it requires to re-design the engine.cheers/Igor

Hi Tay,

I have just bought a 2007 1.8 and looked into this issue for a while to satisfy myself that all was well.

In my recent thread a posted a link to this doc

which seems to be the Toyota TSB or whatever they call them about this issue.

The new dipstick sounds right (it is basically recalibrated so you use 1/2 litre extra oil)

The actual fix seems to be (if I read the doc right) remanufactured pistons which have twice the number of oil drain holes around the ring slit for the oil control ring.

This means oil drains better, reduces piston temp and means oil is recycled through the slit more frequently and so does not degrade/break down and cause the ring to stick with a build up of carbon.

The only way you could really tell this is br breaking the engine open and checking the pistons (a bit drastic if all is well). You could prob also check the engine number with the V5 and if it is different with Toyota customer services and check that it is an optifit short engine. If not then I guess that the garage (was it Toyota dealer) may have just changed the pistons/rings if the bores were ok. I do not understand why they didnt go through Toyota on this one though - I can only assume they were trying to do it in the most affordable way possible???

Can you confirm who was the work done by and was it done under any sort of warranty or did you pay for it all?

Surprised they did not say it needs running in though (unless second hand) the TSB is specific that it needs 1000 mile period at least of gentle treatment like any other new engine.

Hi Tim,

It was done under extended warranty by a Toyota dealer (having been bought there a few years earlier).

It's not using any oil so I'm more curious than unhappy, but reading that document it does seem like it wasn't a full short motor change. There is no sticker in engine bay etc. They did also specifically say it didn't need running in, which I also thought was odd..

Hello My name is Jessica. I bought a 2009 Toyota Camry and every 1000 km I put on the car it was down 1L of oil !! When I went to Toyota they told me "it was normal" but I knew it was bull****. All Toyotas or Hondas made from 2007 to 2012 have this problem, which they have known and decided to do nothing about it. The problem is the piston rings on these cars need to be changed and updated due to they get carbonated. Just because I'm a girl, they thought I was stupid, so I decided to do something about it. I went in and bitched at them, until they changed the piston rings! I had to bring my car every time it was down 1L of oil. After 3 times, Toyota took my car in and changed the piston rings. After they changed the piston rings, up to this day it still consumes oil and when I bring it in for an oil change, in order for Toyota to monitor the oil, they top off the oil, as if that is going to save the damn problem!! They also do not record in their records that it was down in oil. The mechanics are told to top off the oil, just to cover their asses. They are trying to hide this problem. I've had Toyota all my life and this is the first time I am ****** and I will never buy from them again! IF ANYONE OUT THERE IS INTERESTED IN HELPING TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM PLEASE EMAIL ME: XOXOBELLAITALIANAXOXO@HOTMAIL.COM. I would love to talk to you about this issue, as well as receive your story. I've gotten some legal advise, and if I get enough customers who have the same issue, we can legally sue Toyota for this issue and make it a public interest piece as well. As regards the Camry, official sales for the European market ended in 2004.

New registrations in the UK between 2005 and 2013 have totalled 38 so far - most of which, I would imagine, are grey imports from Japan.

I smell a rat here, Camry was discontinued in the UK way back in 2004 so a 2009 must be a grey import ( and therefore no Toyota warranty ) Also the Camry was never fitted with the 1.4, 1.6 or 1.8 VVTi engines which suffered this fault.

Also to say Toyota did nothing about it is false the affected cars had the warranty on their engines extended to 7 years 120,000 miles for oil consumption issues. Hardly doing nothing!!
