Hmmm not good, keep us informed as to what's wrong,

Just got back home a really friendly RAC patrol man. His diagnosed it as being an injector. His bought car home and will be providing me with a courtesy car tomorrow

So question now is are injectors a all in one unit or seperate he mentioned something about a rail or something to be honest I was absolutely freezing and didn't really pay attention

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140698329819?redirect=mobile&autoredirect=off

Found these on eBay or am I better off buying a new one

Thanks

I personally would take a chance with a cheap used one, but as I would have a go myself at replacing it, there would be no fitting charges if it didn't work.

Reconditioned ones seem to be around £200, I'd hate to think what a new one cost. If you got them at £50 you would have 3 to try, ones got to work?

But the safe option, if the RAC man has diagnosed the problem correctly is to buy a know working one, but this won't be cheap.

You should have listened to what he said, do you know which one is faulty?

Looks like a garage jobbie for you......

Had a guy come over last night and had a look at it. His got good reputation for diesel engines and also deals with Japanese imported vehicles. Was recommended by a neighbour his getting it recovered on Monday night hoping to have it done by Wednesday. So shall wait and see how things pan out.

Will update once it's done fingers crossed should be good news !!!!

Be sure to do that fuel filter before serious work begins. They can cause horrendous problems especially if water is freezing in them.

Did he say it was the Injector as well? Did he plug any diags into it at all?

He had a look at it on his way home from work

He started the engine up and a lot of fuel was leaking out. Said it might be injector seals will have look properly when he gets it into his place.

Good question, and furramore,,,,without teaching any grannies how to boil eggs, I am sure it's not just a case of buying injectors on eBay and fitting them willy nilly.....do they not have to go to Mr.T for fitment and "signing in " to the ECU of the car...? That's if it is the injector....as Jedi is implying, I would expand it to paying for an hour's diagnostic either at a specialist or a T. DEALER.....this could be one of those bottomless pit problems if not done methodically.

Wise Guy Kev ?

His just taken the car on his truck went along as had few bits to take out of car. Anyway he opened The bonnet and as well as diesel there was a lot of oil there and a hole in rocker cover. Not looking good as possibly could be more than an injector.

I just asked him to tell me tomorrow when he starts taking it.

Will update tomorrow

A hole in the rocker cover does not sound good.

Could this be what the bang you heard was?

Has the cam belt been changed do you know?

Yes timing belt was changed couple years ago by Toyota.

I'm not looking forward to hearing from him tomorrow. I think that's what the bang probably was.

That's the annoying thing thought we'd find a car that's been well looked after. Looked at loads at garages and privates. This one was fantastic due to the history etc. 3 folders full of invoices all Toyota. Just goes to show even if it's well maintained its still got its pitfalls

It was bought private from an elderly gentleman who has downsized to an Auris. He bought it in 2002 and was second owner was registered to Toyota prior to that. If I remember correctly he bought it when it's was less than a year old. Like I said its been well maintained compared to some we had seen. We looked at one and was advertised as having 56k miles on it and after a check with RAC for its history it revealed it had done over 156k. This one that we bought was after about 3 months of hunting and it was immaculate compared to all we had seen

Hi bluerav4,

Thanks for your PM. The damage to the engine's top end sounds extremely serious, and also very unusual. Traditionally, injectors have been screwed into cylinder heads (like spark plugs), and I've never heard of one of these popping out of a head. Have had a quick look at the Haynes manual, and the RAV's injectors look as if they're held down by a bolted-down clamp. Sounds as if one/more of these had given way.

Wouldn't have thought likely under normal circumstances; and I wouldn't have thought that a broken cambelt would produce this kind of damage either.

Sheen, you're obviously in Warwickshire: how about posting to see whether a Club member could visit the car? Or, if you're a member, then AA or RAC etc would provide an engineer to give an independent technical opinion.

Although the oil etc leakage is dramatic, the damage might be limited to cover, injector bracket and probably the injector. If your garage's quote seems astronomic, then take some photos of the top end and go into another workshop, or a diesel specialist (who work on this area of the engine all the time).

Thank you very much Chris for your reply. Another member has said exactly same as you. Worst case if the screw for injector has sheared then they should be able to drill it out and if that wasn't possible a cylinder head would be needed.

I think they've seen me coming and I will be going later on armed with the info you guys have given me

I will try and take some pictures but it's on a lift at the moment so might be difficult. However I do have an iPhone and will record what is said not only to protect myself but pass it to local trading standards.

I am really annoyed as this garage was recommended by a neighbour. Maybe they his friends or whatever but no way am I going to pay for a complete engine

Thanks guys you have been a really valuable asset in all the advice you have given

Really appreciated will update later

Just returned from the garage. These are the parts I've had to buy

4copper washers for injectors

Return pipe

Retaining bolts for injector x4

Oil and fuel and air filter

Injector pipe seals

There's a pipe that had come apart cost about £63 from Toyota as well as some otber parts that need to be replaced

it appears injector came loose and broke the pipe.

I'm hoping the car will be ready for Saturday morning.

I think they thought it would be funny to wind me up and told me that I'd need an engine. I'm so relieved. They concerned about why the injector came loose as the bolt wasn't sheared either. Have ordered all the parts came to £197.09 incl VAT so quite happy with that. Will update when I get car back hopefully

Thanks again guys
