Engine Issue . 1981 Toyota Hilux

Hi, my Name is Emanuel, im from Malta and i have a 1981 Toyota Hilux (4 x 4) and well the thing is im going to start a new project on my dad's ''truck'' but the thing is since the engine is a bit old and the truck is a bit heavy the engine seems to be a bit weak. ( like when it comes to uphills it's as if the truck weighs a ton ) So my question is, is it a good idea to put a turbo? and if its ''OK'' what else does needs changing? My other other was to change the whole engine and put a 2.8 on it ( the one from a later model) but im guess it would still cost money to do that so im just checking my options before i start doing anything to it :P

Thanks for your Time.

Hello Emanuel, it will be quite a lot of work to fit a turbo to the engine and it would be putting extra stain on an `old` engine so probably best to put a complete engine in.

Have a word with the lads on the UK Hilux forum. :)

hi matey

to power the engine is not simple way.

the more cycinder charging the more power and the more internal combustion pressure and exhaust gas temperature. now look -- the more temp the less reliability of all pistons (risk for melting down). as to the crankshaft --- it has also been designed for atmospheric engine. if you install turbo -- you will have a risk that each shaft pins will not follow max load and it would be a risk to crack the shaft (due to more pressure pushing on the pins)

---now it is obvious it is better and cheapper to install other engine having more output. the above is self explained.do not gamble with yr safety !!! cheers/Igor
