2010 Avensis

Hi, I am thinking about buying a nearly new Avensis and looking at the estate version. A few questions; is the 1.8 powerful enough to move such a large car? Is there any known problems with it, I have read about the gasket thing and the goodwill warranty, but does this problem still occur with these newer cars?

The gasket issues dont (AFAIK) affect the newer power units. 1.8 isn't underpowered for the car in my view

Depends on many factors and what you want it for - motorway use, expected annual mileage, load-carrying ability etc etc.

For tootling gently around the countryside the 1.8 would probably be adequate, but if you're going to hammer up and down the motorways and trunk roads lugging heavy loads about then you'd probably be better off with a bigger oil-burner under the bonnet.

Horses for courses really......

the 1.8VVTI is 147bhp. By comparison the 2.0 D4D is 126 & the 2.2 D4D is 150.

It will be down on torque & peak power will be higher up the rev. range.

You don't say what your intended mileage per year is or how long that you may keep the car for but if you aren't doing big mileages or planning on changing within warranty I would be tempted to go petrol as it's a simpler engine (in fairness i haven't seen reports on T27s of the common D4D on T25 issues).

Drive them all ideally with the OPS's normal weight/people on board, the 126PS Diesel IMO is a bit flat with the weight of the Avensis and i would get a 150 if it was to be a Diesel.

If i was using the car in town or short journeys it would be the petrol, no DPF to worry about.

Main thing for a 2010 model is to try and get a 5yr warranty car.

Thanks for the reply guys. Today I bought a 1.8 petrol, won't get it until after new year due to the amount of time it takes for the loan company to deposit funds into my bank. I wanted to avoid the diesel due to what I've heard about the particulate thing. It was a company car in its previous life and has done 20000 miles. I bought it from a Toyota dealership and it comes with a 5yr warranty. Pretty happy. It doesn't have parking sensors but has the camera at the back. I might get a tow bar for it to carry the family bikes. Also quite like the look of the bar that stops stuff rolling around the boot.

Just have to sit and wait - it's like Christmas all over again!
