Damn Egr Valve

Well, Just had Toyotas in Cambridge call me to tell me that the valve is broken and that it is not covered under their warranty!!! Total bill is 366 pounds and so many pence lol. Not best please with this outcome but i guess that is life. Does anyone know if it may have caused any other damage to the engine at all? They are telling me that no other damage would have happened. Not convinced as yet.

Thanks in advance

There's a few questions on this;

How many miles has the car done?

What prompted the issue to come to light?

What usage does the car have i.e in short drive/long drives?

Do you know what the EGR valve does?

Does the car have full service history?

It does a mixture of journeys

Pass - there are explanations on the web

Yes full service history at this dealer

Thanks

The valve sticking is quite common and no doubt made worse if its not cleaned out, this isn't part of the service tick sheet (AFAIK). Mr T is not alone with this issue, all manufacturers suffer.

It would be difficult to see if the car has suffered from carbon clogging without taking the engine apart, however as Mr T acknowledges this issue you should be ok. If it does lead to head gasket failure you will be covered until 112k or 7yrs. So it depends how long you’re going to keep the car.

Short journey's make the emissions system work harder as the engine is cold for longer.

Why is it not covered under warranty?

Also, is it just jammed or actually broken? I don't think I've heard of anyone's EGR valve actually breaking!

Usually they just clog up with soot and require removing and cleaning...

I'll go sticking :)

If the valve is sticking and the car 4-5 yrs old why would it be a warranty item if the warranty if 3yrs?

I would rather have a £6,500 engine if that goes

They said it was actually broken and it is very rare for this to happen. Trust my luck lol. Am taking it back in 1000mls so they can check oil etc....

How much did they charge you for the EGR valve and fitting again? You know that you can pick up a new genuine Mr T EGR valve and pipe for £130 off eBay?One forum member off here bought a new one for around the £50 mark if I remember correctly! I'd like to know what part broke and where that bit went???

The valve is very easy to take off and clean. I have 2 so when I'm cleaning 1 the other is ready to just pop on. Takes about 20mins max to do!!!

When he mentioned it wasn't covered under warranty my brain assumed he was implying he still had one (e.g. the 1 year warranty you get if you guy a used-approved car); I stupidly didn't think to ask if he actually had a warranty

If it is broken and you're a hands-on kinda dude, would be much cheaper to buy the part and DIY; I must admit I haven't done it myself, but from the guide it doesn't look too tricky :)

This does depend on what bit, exactly, of the EGR has broken tho'...!

They charged me £215 for the valve and I think it was £80 ish for labour lol. Yes I could have done it but I wanted them to check for other possible faults just in case...
