Recent Service

Sorry guys and gals not been on here lately but my Rav has been boringly reliable.

I recently had a "60,000" dealer service, which I assume is because it is service no 6,mileage is 47k.

I was told it needed complete new pads all round and front discs. New plugs also part of 60k service. For this plus MOT cost was £650.00.

On collection I mentioned "I suppose you changed the brake fluid"? Er no, we check it but only change if necessary.

It's never been changed in my ownership and unlikely that the previous owner would change.

Every other car I've owned in recent years (Ford,Audi and Mercedes) all recommend change BF every 2 years.

Toyota brake fluid must be good.

So, in my position would you change it?

The brake fluid should be changed every 2 years as staded in the service schedule. However, it is not included in the service price so expect to pay extra. Better still, if you are familiar with the process, do it yourself.

The plugs aren't cheap either. Had mine changed at the local garage and they apologized for the cost! I knew beforehand.

What I don't understand is that if it is included in the service schedule why the dealer does not at least suggest it? The same one has carried out the last 4 services.

I would pay for it if recommended.

People.. why go to the garages!!! Bunch of rip offs, services and general maintenance can be done by anyone with little motoring knowledge.. I'm not motoring whizz have hardly any tools but always do everything myself rather than pay extortionate prices.

Some of the better dealers will try to sell these additional items but others don't. You can find them in the service schedule but you shouldn't have to. Has your cabin filter ever been done if the brake fluid hasn't? Your windows will be steaming up all the time.

Sorry Luke,I have always been employed in a fitting occupation when I was working and did all my own repairs and servicing.

I now find that, for various reasons I am unable to do these things for myself much to my annoyance.

I also have complete confidence in that garage who have in the past saved me from much larger bills.

So that is why I go to the garage!

I changed the cabin filter 2 years ago following your recommendations on here. Suppose it's time to change it again?

Seemples, Luke....see when ye drive a 2009 SR 180, and there is the possibility in the future it may require a new part engine which will depend on it being "adequately maintained", and ye happen to have an intervertebrae prone to prolapse....ye get a garage to do it. Having said that, it need not be a Toyota Main Dealer....the law is apparently as long as OEM PARTS ARE USED. (A big polis told me that)All receipts would require to be chronologically kept.

When I am out of warranty in 3/2012, I will be buying the bits off Kingo AND HAVING A LOCAL MAN DO IT......have bought the house next door for Anchorman...!!!!!

Big Kev

Here is an example of a minging cabin filter.

CIMG2372.jpg

Took this out of my Rav that I bought a few weeks back. Looks like it hasn't been changed in years. The rest of the car will be getting a good long overdue service cos if this is typical of it's recent service history, no doubt there will be other nasties waiting.

This is a pic of my wee baby.

CIMG2013.jpg

Some folks expressed an interest in it when I mentioned it in a previous post so I thought I would post a gratuitous piccy. Excuse the socket set used as a temporary chock, this was taken just after her sixteen year hibernation and the handbrake was dodgy. B)

p.s. Big thanks to Kingo for the parts.

Cheers.

Pollen filters are electrostatically charged, they are designed to pull all those micro pollen particles into the filter, they should NEVER be blown out as all those micro particles are a hazard to your health if blown out in concentration

Won't be much pollen in mine. My bees have collected it all.

Will change it though.

Anyway, can't understand Toyota dealers not at least suggesting attention to items on service schedule but not included in the service. Good opportunity for them to make some extra dough. What is the motor trade coming to?

Correct, very slapdash at the very least. Mention it and the customer thinks you are ripping them off and dont mention it and you are incompetant  oh what a world we live in :D: YES things should be mentioned, if a dealer has few controls in place then service advisors are allowed an easy life, it shouldnt be like that but does happen

Kingo
