Hi All,

I just signed up today so my very first post on this site. Just wanted some advice in general. I currently have a Passat 170 Sport Diesel. I have problems galore with this car ranging from all 4 injectors to Needing new DPF so am Looking to buy a Avensis but not sure which model to chose. Lots of people recommend T180 but some saying it has issues and then there is dreaded D-CAT (Another name for DPF monster) I could really do with some help and advice. I need a Saloon preferably DIESEL (2.2 better) Will be doing 10-15K miles per year and looking to spend around 5 - 5.5K. I have seen a lot of Cars around 70-100K miles on the clock but not sure which version is the best Please your help as it will be much appreciated. I am just Fed up with spending money on my Passat forever

Thanx in advance for your valuable advice :

Hello and welcome! Sorry to hear about your issues with your passat. What is your average mpg with the passat at the moment?

advise MPG wise, expect 30's in Town and 40's on the motorway with the T180.

Get a 2.0 litre Petrol Avensis, cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain. Yes the MPG is worse but 10-15k per annum isn't enough to warrant a Diesel.

I've heard that the Passst suffers from the same problem with the Audi (Same engine) does regarding the injectors and my mate has had a re-call and had 4 new ones under warranty. The Avensis 2.2 T-180 is a lovely car to drive but the mpg is nowhere like what it should be unless you bolt on a tuning (48.9mpg @70mph) piggy-back box! Toyota does have problems (Like most marques) with the EGR valve/DPF (D-CAT) and head gasket issues on the oil burners. But the good news is that Mr T has a pro active approach and covered this issue with a 7 year 112k extended warranty. I find that running V-Power derv helps to maintain the EGR and the car runs better for it. Some also use a fuel additive to.

The T-180 gives you all the toys like sat nav and leather electric seats ect and like all the Avensis models comes with 9 air bags (2 knee) as standard. The brakes are awful so are the headlights, thats why a few of us have changed the original Bosch set up to discs and pads from MTEC which now does the job.

Hope this helps

your budget means a T25 (old model up to end of 2008) or a very high mileage T27 (Jan 2009 on).

For the mileage that you are doing I'm with cabcurtains & would suggest petrol as modern diesels are complicated & therefore often expensive to fix when they go wrong (I know that you've discovered this with VW) - turbos, high pressure injection DPF, DMF etc. etc.

Alternatively if you get a non-T180 2.2 D4D then it has no DPF & you should get at least 5mpg better fuel consumption than the T180. I'm biased no-doubt but if you don't care about leather seats then imo the T25 facelift TR trim level is great value for money - most of the toys for less money. -

I would like to think this would run and run if looked after 2.0 T-Spirit with 12mth Warranty looks like a lot of car IMO.

That does look like a nice motor an all mate. So do some of the other that they have on the pitch. And there is room for some cash off an all I recon
